Wn AP Coach Ron Ekker of the Continental Basketball Association's Catbirds and other La Crosse community leaders have filmed public service announcements aimed at helping prevent the deadly disease AIDS.

The mpign launched Thursday night, was part of an educational program to kick off National AIDS Awareness Month. La Crosse County Health Department joined with a production company and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to produce local commercials for television and radio stations. Public health officials said they believed it was the first time a small county health department had developed local commercials aimed at prevention of the AIDS virus and educating the public about the dis- ready-intolerable traffic mess. They worry about the noise strange faces the center wi bring, particularly on nights when certain rock bands perform. They say Shakopee needs more development for families and jobs not more amusement centers.

More than 1,200 people have signed a petition circulated by the Zaks Zak says the signatures are partly inspired by resentment against the Scottland Companies proponent of the music hall, builder of Canterbury Downs and the largest landowner and developer in SHAKOPEE. Minn (AP) The spotlight was slow to discover this once-drowsy Twin Cities suburb. Now, with still another entertainment development on the horizon, many of the city's 11,500 residents are wincing in an ever-brighter glare. "It just seems like the towns for sale," said Donna Hyatt, a 23-year resident. "It's a heartbreak The development, which started a decade ago with the opening of Val leyfair amusement park, was greeted initially with enthusiasm by residents eager for more job opportunities and town prestige.

After Valley-fair came, in quick succession, a bingo palace, the Renaissance Festival and the Canterbury Downs racetrack. Weary of the traffic and other intrusions, activist homeowners are mounting resistance to yet another entertainment venue a proposed outdoor music hall. "I thought the race brack was a mistake. Now they want to toss one more ticket window here," said Ms. Hyatt, a member of a citizens group known as Citizens Against Starwood Amphitheater.

Those of a different opinion are moving quickly to capitalize on Shakopee newfound momentum. The fledgling visitors and convention bureau is opening a headquarters on the edge of town. New brochures bill Shakopee as "The Entertainment Showcase" of the Midwest. The Starwood Music Center is one more step in the right direction, says Virgil Mean, a 24-year Shakopee resident, past chamber of commerce president and head of the new tourism bureau. Another entertainment attraction, he says, means more property tax dollars for the town and more business for shops, inns and restaurants.

"Change is unavoidable because of our nearness to the metropolitan area," said Mears. "Even if we didn't have any of these attractions, town. People participating in the commercials included city high school and college coaches, the school superintendent, doctors, and radio disc jockey Brucie Bumchuckles "We believe that this type of community action is an important contribution in the fight against the spread of this fatal illness," said Bill Fleming, the health department's AIDS health educator. "I think I struck a nerve in this town. I think most people feel overwhelmed by Scottland," said Zak.

In March, a Rochester real estate broker and his wife were fined $110 each for having the former home of clinic co-founder, the late Dr. Charles H.

Mayo, demolished without a permit. The developer, Rex Savage, had wanted to convert the Queen Anne-style house, built in 1893, into apartments, but found the remodeling costs too high. He had applied for a demolition permit, but was told he would first need an environmental assessment study because the house was on the National Register. Demolition proceeded without the permit. A year ago, the first Mayo Clinic building, built in 1914, was razed to make room for the clinic's new education center.

It, too, was on the National Register. ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) Yet another building on the National Register of Historic Places has fallen victim to the wrecking ball in this southeastern Minnnesota city. And, for the second time, the demolition took place without a permit. Inclusion on the register protects a building from certain remodeling efforts, but does not in itself prohibit demolition.

Razing of the 75-year-old Zumbro Hotel began Tuesday, but officials realized Wednesday that no permit had been issued. It was issued Thursday morning. City Attorney Fred Suhler said Thursday that the lack of a permit was inadvertent, a result of the contractor thinking the project engineer had picked up the permit and vice versa. No charges will be filed, he said. The Zumbro Hotel is being demolished to make room for a new, 197- i This Week Save 50 Save 25 Only! ft On fabrics Crafts! (AP) A prisoner believed to be serving one of the longest non-life prison sentences in Wisconsin shot a deputy and escaped from custody but was recaptured about three hours later, police said.

Police Lt. Mike Masterson said at 9:30 p.m. that searchers had spotted a broken window with blood on it in the vicinity of the escape and took La Ron McKinley. 31, into custody. He had escaped about 6:25 p.m.

at an intersection just south of the Dane County airport, Masterson said. He said the prisoner got away as be was being transported by car by two Milwaukee County sheriffs deputies, but he did not know the details of where McKinley was being taken at the time. "We believe he pulled a small handgun and he shot one of the deputies," Masterson said. He said the officer who was shot was the passenger in the car, Deputy James Paradinovich. 34.

Masterson described the injury as a single gunshot wound to the upper left back that was not believed to be life-threatening. The deputy was being treated at Madison General Hospital. The driver of the car, Deputy Steven Parks, sustained an ankle injury. While details of the escape remained sketchy, Masterson said the car was involved in an accident, striking a pole in front of a service station, and the driver jumped from the car to take cover. Three sue over religion center MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Three students, a teacher and the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union said Friday they will file a federal lawsuit over a religious center on the campus of Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute.

They say the arrangement violates separation of church and state as outlined in the U.S. Constitution because the school is giving preferential treatment to the religious groups that operate the center. The building is leased by Catholic, Lutheran and fundamentalist Christian groups Orlo Almlie, superintendent of the Willmar school district, said Thursday, "We don't see where we're violating any statute." Matthew Stark, associate executive director of the MCLU, and two of the students, Steven and Gregory Molenaar. said their suit would be filed Friday in federal court. The other plaintiffs will include a teacher and another student who will be listed only as John and Richard Doe because they want to remain anonymous.
