IHE HAMMOND llMfcS Financi ialN ews 15 Stocks Hit Record High By ELMER WALZER NEW YORK, June spurt in prices of United States government bonds that carried 15 of the issues to new record highs featured trading on the New York Stock Exchange today. The stock section of the exchange reversed its downtrend of yesterday and registered advances ranging to more than a point without benefit of increased trading. Change in the trend of the share market followed an upturn in London before the New York opening. The latter was influenced by a better outlook for a British-French- Russian pact. Improvement was reported in several lines of business, notably retail and wholesale trade and ia car loadings, the latter rising to a.

new high since December 3. Trading was light because of the approaching week-end. Many market operators were for an extended vacation until Monday and a considerable number of others were on regular summer vacations, takc-i early in anticipation of a pickup in business in the latter part of the month. Commodities failed to follow the trend of stocks and bonds. Grains eased fractionally and rubber futures lost a few points.

World sugar futures eased. Cotton silk futures were firm. Mercantile stocks were strong. New highs for the year were made by Neisner brothers at 27 up and Safeway stores at up Dunhill at its high of was up i. McCrory stores touched up Purity bakeries equalled its high for the year at 16 up Grocery and baking turned active at a fractional advance.

U. S. Realty and Loft were active, although they were about unchanged. Final Grain Review CHICAGO, June 2. (U.P.) Wheat prices lost ground on the Chicago Board of Trade today as reports of beneficial rains in the winter and spring wheat belts, encouraged moderate selling.

At the close wheat was off to cent, July 77 corn was off to cent, July 51, and oats were 2 cent lower, July Trading was fairly slow, and after an early decline of about a cent, prices steadied and held within a narrow range. Private crop estimates placing the wheat crop at 700,000,000 bushels were generally in line with what traders had expected and had little effect marketwise. Good rains in Kansas and the Dakotas as well as in other areas of the southwest and northwest gave the market a bearish undertone but after the early selling, there was not much pressure. Good resting order supporting was evident. The weather forecasl was for in most states ex ccpt Kansas.

Minneopolis and Kansas City markets showed more weakness than Chicago, and Winnipeg lost about a cent on rains in the Canadian spring belt. North American export business was reported to be slow, with possibly 150,000 bushels so 14 abroad. Liverpool wheat closed to cent lower. The United Kingdom bought 12,700 tons of Australian wheat and, China took a cargo of Australian flour, C5rn prices ''eld close to previous closing levels in light trading. Selling waas mostly local in character.

Foreign demand remained flat. Local shippers sold 38,000 bushels of corn, and purchases to-arrive were 12,000 bushels. Local grain receipts included an estimated 250 cars of corn, 7 cars of wheat, and 35 cars of oats. New York Stocks NEW YORK, June otal sales, yesterday's total sales, 598,540. LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE TOWNSEND WILL KEEP UP FIGHT WASHINGTON, June --Dr. Francis E. planned today to carry his fight or old age pensions of as much is $200 a month into the 1940 elections campaigns "with greater nthusiasm than ever." The pension leader said he was not discouraged by the house's 302 to 97. defeat of his plan yesterday.

'We have just begun to fight," Townsend said in a statement. 'This congress has defeated our legislation temporarily, but they lave offered nothing to the mil- ions of people who are consigned to chronic pauperism." The Townsend plan, sponsored in a bill by Rep. Joe Hendriks, democrat of Florida, was rejected by roll call vote in which 194 democrats, 107 republicans and tbe lone farmer-laborite opposed it. Sen. Sheridan Downey, democrat of California, who supported the ialifornia every Thursday" plan, said the house vote would not change his plan to introduce a Townsend bill in the senate, probably as an amendment to proposed changes in the social security act.

"I want to put the senate on record," Downey said, "and find out who is paying lip service to the old age pension plan and who really has his heart in it." I A I Steals Auto; Thief Finds Baby Asleep in Back Seat CRAWFORDSVILLE, June When Louis Daniel Morris, 20, of Alamo, stole an automobile here to drive home from a skating rink, he was electrified to find a 2-year-old baby sleeping in the back seat. Fearful of a charge of kidnaping, he raced back to the Crawfordsville police station, admitted the theft of the machine and gave the baby to the police. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Rice, parents of the child, came to the police station to report the, theft only to find their baby playing with the cops and Morris in a cell.

He faces charges of vehicle taking today. EASTON TO PAY FOR KILLING GOP MICHIGAN CITY, June 2. -f i e-y a r-o 1 Orelle Easton, Valley City, youth condemned to die early tomorrow for the fatal shooting of State Policeman Ray Dixon last June 26, was moody and reflective today. He refused James Swain, to converse with Evansville Negro, BOSTON, June of a three-pound baby boy to Mrs. John Roosevelt, daughter-in- law of the president and Mrs.

Roosevelt, was recorded today at Boston Lying-in hospital. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the president, was at the hospital throughout the night with the younger Mrs. Roosevelt, the former Anne Lindsay Clark, whose condition was described as "good" by Dr. Charles G.

Shedd. The child's birth was premature by about seven weeks The president's wife was saddened by the affair. As early as last January, the bride of last June was under observation at Peter Bent Brigham hospital for several days. In Washington, on May 17th, the wife of the president told a press conference that she expected to have a 10th grandchild "probably in July." For that reason, she said, Anne would be unable to be in Washington when King George and Queen of Great Britain are visitors at the White House. and Adrian Miller, of Fort Wayne, his death row companions.

He was visited yesterday by the Rev. R. A Ofstadal of Valley City. Prison officials said he has shown little emotion during the time he has been in the death row. Easton still maintained that his brcther, Clarence, who was shot and killed by an Illinois posse when Orelle was arrested, fired the shots that killed Dixon.

His execution was to occur at 2 a. m. daylight time tomorrow, as committment papers ordered the execution for 1 a. m. Standard time Gov.

M. Clifford Townsend earl this week refused to commute Easton's sentence on a plea from his mother that the execution sentence be set aside. The supreme court upheld his conviction. BRIGGS WORKERS STILLJJNSTRIKE 70,000 Men Idle as Dewey Tries to Break Deadlock Over Contract POSTMASTERS AT CONVENTION I June of the Automobile Workers union (CIO) and officials of the Briggs Manufacturing remained deadlocked today over the basis of union recognition in a new contract, despite settlement of 27 union grievances under the arbitration of James F. Dewey, federal labor conciliator.

A strike called by the union May 22 because of the grievances, which shut down 14 automobile factories and left 70,000 workers idle, continued because of contract expiration. Union officials said they were determined that Briggs' seven plants would not reopen until they were granted a union shop contract. Negotiators meet with Dewey again this morning in an attempt to formulate a preliminary agreement under which work could be resumed. Dewey indicated that both sides had fought over the basis for union recognition nearly three hours yesterday after the decision on grievances had provec acceptable to the management and the union representatives. The federal conciliator planncil "an altogether new approach to the entire question" today in his effort to restore the vital flow of bodies that has paralyzed Chrysler am other manufacturers because lack of supplies.

He said that three or four "other importan changes" requested by the union also were included in details to be nettled by the preliminary agree' ment. said that resumption of work might be possible' as soon as the preliminary agreement can be drawn up, but indicated that a wide gap between the negotiators might prolong the strike until the complete contract is negotiated.
