Friday, Jan. 16, 1981 SPECTRUM Page 4 When the ncac'i over 0 continuation of the "Imagine" romantic Utopia that Lennon life took him over the past several years, through the period of househusband, father and lover, and then back again into the recording studio. What "Double Fantasy" unwinds to is a reaffirmation of the love, joy and happiness that Lennon and Ono enjoyed over the final few years of their lives together, replacing the political overtones that were exposed in some of their earlier works. BUT "DOUBLE FANTASY" IS every bit as political as "Give Peace A Chance." Lennon makes a statement reaffirming his love for his wife, his son and his chosen lifestyle and succeeds. If anything, you wonder how two people could be so happy together.

Ono's songs are a mirror reflection of her husband's, rather unsurprisingly. But while Lennon bases his music on 1950's roots (as he always has), Ono chooses to express herself with a newer sound more associated with new wave or punk albums. I can't really recommend any of the Ono songs, although "I'm Moving On" complements Lennon's "I'm Losing You" quite nicely your sweet talk for when you score Keep your Monday kisses for your glass lady I want the truth and nothing more I'm moving on, moving on, you're getting phony," she writes). Ono's tour de force on the disc, "Kiss Kiss Kiss" is reminiscent of Donna Summer's "Love to Love You," and she sounds like a Vaudeville crooner on "I'm Your Angel." IT'S AN INTERESTING COMBINATION with Lennon's songs, one that I feel doesn't totally succeed. (Many critics in Britain Lennon's home country, mind you seem to like Ono's songs better than Lennon's, however.

Lennon's songs are the highlight of the album, opening with "(Just Like) Starting Over." Though reaching the point of overkill, it expresses Lennon's feelings and sets the tone for his remaining songs when I see you darling It's like we both are falling in love again il be like starting Lennon addresses his self-imposed retirement on "Watching the Wheels," which opens side two. "I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round I really love to watch them roll No longer riding on the merry-go-round I just had to let go," Lennon sings, shouting out the last verse. "WATCHING THE WHEELS' IS probably the most interesting song on the album. While critics scorned Lennon's retirement, he was simply "doing fine watching the shadows on the wall." Both "Woman" and "Dear Yoko" describe Lennon's feelings of love toward Ono, while "Cleanup Time" tells of Lennon's work around the house and Ono's dealings with the Lennon fortune queen is in the counting home-Counting out the money The king is in the kitchen Making bread and honey No friends and yet no enemies Absolutely Perhaps the most beautiful song on the album is Lennon's lullaby-like "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)." One could almost imagine Lennon singing the song to his young son Sean a few years back. Even then, though, Lennon gives us a dose of his philosophy is what happens to you While you're busy Making other ALL IN ALL.

"DOUBLE FANTASY" leaves you with the impression of love, joy and happiness, albeit I wished we would have heard more Lennon and less Ono on the album. Like Lennon said over ten years ago, all you need is love. He and Ono give it to us here. It would be quite easy and tempting te call John Len-non's and Yoko Ono's latest joint album effort, "Double Fantasy," a complete success. After all, Lennon has assumed God-like qualities since he was gunned down in New York City December 8, not long after the release of "Double Fantasy," his first album in five years.

And Ono, once thought of as the Dragon Lady who destroyed the Beatles and John Lennon in that order has become a symbol of hope, strength and family after the former Beatles' death ideals that Lennon often spoke of before his death. But "Double Fantasy" is far from a perfect album. In fact, slight might be a better word for the Lennon -Ono release. Indeed, it is a true combination, unlike some of the earlier releases by the pair. Of the 14 songs on the album, seven are written by Lennon, seven by Ono.

IN THE PAST. LENNON always lulled you to sleep before he hit you over the head with a wry smile on his face. However, his songs on "Double Fantasy" pull no punches: they're about as straight-forward about his life and relationship with Yoko Ono as they justifiably could be. Lennon has alwaysbeen at his best when his anger has shown up in his works But that anger is suppressed in this album.
