Four Mets Clip BUGS, 7-5 To Open 10-Game Lead Ey POHLA SMITH UPI Sports Writer PITTSBURGH New York Mete defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-5, Monday to pad their lead over their nearest National League Eastern Division rivals to 10 games. "I like the position we right now," said winning pitcher David Cone, 15-3. "This was a big- win. There's a big difference between the obvious two-game swing. They win this one and have a chance to sweep (the two-game set).

Now they really have to battle to get back into it." The Pirates, losers of four straight and eight of the last 11, have gone quietly in most of their recent defeats, but they battled back twice before succumbing to New York. After the Mets took a 3-2 lead on Mookie Wilson's RBI single in the seventh, the Pirates tied the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI pinch-hit single by Ken Oberkfell. New York blew the game open with a four-run eighth inning capped by Wilson's three-run home run off loser Jeff Robinson, 9-3. In the bottonvof the inning, Pittsburgh scored twice on Bobby Bohilla's RBI single and Sid Bream's sacrifice fly. Randy Myers came in for Roger McDowell and retired three straight and then pitched the ninth to earn his 22nd save.

"I thought the club was ready to play today," said Pittsburgh Manager Jim Leyland, who had accused the team of giving up during a just- completed 2-5 road trip. "They played hard. They hit some balls hard they just hit them at people. Yeah; we had a couple chances to score when we didn't, but we scored five runs, and'they (the Mets) have been giving up one." The Mets, outspokenly confident in earlier series with the Pirates, declined to declare the season over Monday. "Sure we got a 10-game lead with what, 20-some games left, but not yet," Wilson said.

"Give me about five more games and I'll be satisfied." Similarly, Leyland indicated he will try to keep the Piratesi from conceding. "If I say it's impossible (to catch New York), 111 look like a fool to the players," he said. "If I say no question, we're gonna come back and win it, I look like a fool to the Vest of the world. I'd like to think this team has enough character that it's going to be playing out the season hard. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the first on Jose Land's RBI triple and a run-scoring fielder's choice ground ball by Andy Van Slyke; The Mets pulled to within 2-1 in the second on Bister's RBI single.

Darryl Strawberry tied the score 2-2 in the fifth when he hit his 31st homer. After a 19-minute rain delay, the game started with a bit of controversy. With one out arid the count 3-2, Gregg Jefferies bounced a ball out of the batter's box three feet down the first-base line. Catcher Mike LaVal- liere fielded the ball and threw to first for the out, but home "plate umpire Bob Engel ruled ball After Pirates Manager Jim Leyland argued, and first base umpire Joe West overruled Engel and ordered Jefferies out. Buddy Bell singled to put runners at first and second. Billy Hatcher sacrificed and Charlton intentionally walked Rafael Ramirez to load the bases.

Alex Trevino flied out before Forsch lined a 3-2 pitch into the left- center field gap to clear the bases.
