His hair has streaks of gray, more wrinkles have been added to the famous furrowed brow, and there's visible pvidenee that even monster wind up with a sag at the TV series. The veteran of more than 400 films is now being talked up as a supporting actor Oscar contender for "Defiant Ones," in which he plays the ex-convict who talks a mob out of lynching Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. He has become one of the busiest character players in filmland. But does this mean that Chan ey' really through with horror roles for good? The middleaged monster says he is. He says he's too old to scare anyone, that he couldn't stand the makeup, that they don't make 'em like they used to.

But with the new spook cycle in full swing, it probably wouldn't surprise anybody if Lon Chaney Jr. forgot himself and returned from the grave once more. could trade clothing. But the resolution appeared headed for rejection in the 82-na-tion general assembly because of failure to win the necessary two-thirds majority.

The vote in the committee was 32 to 18 with 30 abstentions. The United States and Britain voted no, while the Soviet Union and its entire Soviet bloc voted yes. The assembly was set to consider the resolution at a night meeting winding up a lackluster three months session. In addition to being unable to reach any decisive agreement at the 1958 session over the future of Algeria, U.N. diplomas failed to break the East-West deadlock on outer space.

Representative of the Asian-African countries pleaded in vain for enough support to assure assembly approval of the resolution. France boycotted the debate.
