TRANSCRIPT-BULLETIN Page 3 THURSDAY March 14, 1996 Critical issues facing Utah border town Annexation day that the emotions and concerns of Wendover residents revolve around the education of their children. We appreciate you being here, Councilman Dale Stewart stated. We have a lot of concerns and problems, but our number one issue is the school system. We want an elementary school in a community that does not have one. JOE WILLIAMS WENDOVER CITY COUNCILMAN Nevada, now is a good time to make those needs known.

Gov. Leavitt is a good friend of Gov. Millers, said Mantes. Annexation could happen if that is what the community wants. Wendover resident Chris Rose stated during Tuesdays meeting that people in that community would not even think about annexation if Tooele County and the state considered Wendover (residents) better than inferior people.

Rose added, We are treated as if we are inferior parents and our kids do not deserve better. That is not fair. I came to Wendover to make money. I am making plenty of money, but there is no school for my kids. That is wrong.

Linnell told Wendover residents Tuesday that state leaders will not lead the parade on annexation or any other issue in the community. We will take our lead from you, he said. We will do nothing on annexation until someone in this community triggers it. It is your decision, not ours. continued from front page know that most people out here want to stay in Utah.

No one, including Morgan, asked state leaders to look into the issue of annexation during Tuesdays meeting. But Bob Linnell, Gov. Mike Leavitts deputy for governmental relations, said now is the time for community residents to decide what they want. You are the masters of your own destiny, said Linnell. If I were the mayor out here.

Id try to get a referendum on the June primary and find out what the people want. Richard Urey, assistant to Nevada Gov. Bob Miller, told the Transcript-Bulletin Monday that annexing Wendover, Utah, into their state is not something Nevada officials are particularly interested in. But according to Linnell, both Gov. Leavitt and Gov.

Miller are more open to that idea than Urey has stated. Sen. George Mantes (D-Tooele) said that if residents of Wendover, Utah, want to be annexed into General Election in November. Skyles said work on a Wendover school could begin by early 1997 if the school bond election passes. The building should be ready for occupancy at the beginning of the 1998-99 school year.

It is estimated that an elementary school in Wendover will cost $4.4 million. But according to Skyles, it is possible that taxpayers may be asked to support a school bond totalling $8 million. Additional monies would be used for improvements at schools in Stansbury Park and Tooele. Roy Stout, business administrator for the school district, has stated that for every one million dollars in bonds, a home owner with a house valued at $100,000 would see annual property taxes jump by $5.50. Councilman Stewart urged his fellow townspeople Tuesday to stand united.

He said Wendover residents should all become registered voters and make their voices heard when the school bond election is placed before voters. dent of the community, drew loud applause and support Tuesday by stating that she and fellow residents are tired of Wendover students not getting their fair share when it comes to education. We pay taxes here, like they do in Tooele, she stated. When they bond for a new school (in Tooele or Grantsville), we pay for that and get nothing. Its time for Wendover to be at the top of the list.

Tripp also discussed what she calls broken promises by former school board members and superintendents. Then addressing current Tooele County School Superintendent Paul Skyles, she stated, This time youd better come through with your promises, because we have them recorded on TV and in the newspapers. Wendover residents were assured by the Tooele County School Board last month that an election will be held sometime this year to determine taxpayers support of a new elementary school in the community. According to Skyles, the optimum time to present the school bond decision would be during the By Mary Ruth Hammond CORRESPONDENT From health care, to water rights, to having their town annexed by the state of Nevada, the people of Wendover, Utah had an open invitation Tuesday night to discuss anything with top-ranking state, county and local officials. But there is only one major concern townspeople there share, according to the 20 or so residents who addressed leaders during that meeting.

We want an elementary school built in a community that does not have one, said City Councilman Joe Williams. That sentiment was echoed by several of the approximately 250 residents gathered at Wendover community building, including Heber Rodriguez. He says its ironic that in a community with two of everything two mayors, two police departments, two fire stations there is noelementary school on the Utah side of the border. There had been talk prior to this weeks meeting that Wendover, Utah, residents might ask that their town be annexed into Nevada. However, that request was not made by Mayor Brenda Morgan or anyone else Tuesday.

Furthermore, the idea did not appear to be popular with the majority of residents attending that meeting. (See related story). Bob Linnell, deputy of governmental relations for Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, started the Wendover meeting by saying that he, Senator George Mantes (D-Tooele), Tooele County Commissioners, and a host of other leaders were there because of genuine concern. We dont come with preconceived solutions or an agenda, said Linnell.

This is an honest effort on our part to provide a way for (Wendover, Utah residents) to express concerns, and for us to understand and relate to your emotions. It quickly became evident Tues Sports Rec LOOK FOR THE LATEST SCORES AND HIGHLIGHTS IN THIS ISSUE Outlet store closes doors Beginning with the 1996-97 school year, elementary students in Wendover, Utah, will have no permanent structure or building to attend. Over the past 10 years, students in that age group have crossed the state line to be educated in the Elko County School District in Nevada. At the same time, secondary students from both Wendover and West Wendover have been educated approximately two miles away, on die Utah side of the border. The educational arrangement between the Utah and Nevada school districts expires this year.

Elko County School District is building a new high school in West Wendover, which should be completed by fall. Members of the Tooele County School Board voted last month to house elementary students living in Wendover, Utah, in 10 modular units on a temporary basis beginning with the 1996-97 school year. Wendover residents have repeatedly stated they do not want their students attending school in trailers because they believe the temporary basis will become permanent. Additionally, they have complained there will be no playground, lunchroom or gym in the modular units. Larry Lee, who has been the manager of Grocery Outlet for the past five months, expressed his disappointment over the stores closure. Its sad that people in Tooele dont support their own businesses, he said. Every time a business closes, its just one more nail in the coffin. Eventually everyone will end up going to Salt Lake to shop. The grocery retailer sold merchandise that had been purchased directly from the manufacturer, as overruns, inventory imbalances and label changes.
