Mr Martin, who lectured in the Bennington College theatre last Saturday night and is a leading authority In this country on the modern dance, has been familiar with Miss Flades work since she was a member of the origmal Mary Wlgman group in Germany. His review of Miss Flade's program folia ws In order to open the series of dance events which is to be given this sumnvi in the theatre of Bennington Collage, Tina Flade crossed the country fiom California to Vermont and gave last wee'e I tier first recital In the East since her American debut in the Fall of 1933 The event was one of singular Interest in that it showed moie cltarly than has yet been shown just what happens to a sensitive at 1 1st unuer the mflii'mte of a new en-vliomnent Miss Flade as will be recalled was the i youngest member of the famous original I group of Mary Wlgman Germany and I had only begun to tuin her attention to solo work before she came to this coun-tiy When she danced New York she revealed not only an excellent technical background along the characteristic Wig-man lines but a distinct flair for movement of an individual kind She was gay, light, exuberant and altogethet charming But there was a lark of soiid-nj of substance, her dances that made her gifts as a composer seem to lag behind her gifts as a performer With a Wisdom that is rare in artiU who believe In their abilities. Miss Flade took stock of herself In relation to th new country to winch she had so recently tome as a sti anger and decided that what she needed was several years of quiet woik and ie-onentatlon Hu pel foi inane at Bt nnington last wwk was the fust opportunity to judge of the results of the period ol aajustment It wa txperience of lare interest, lor the dancer I who apptared then wax recognizably the same dancer who had formcily appeared in New York, but a vast transfoimatlon had taken place Here was not onlj a superb performance rr inly from the standpoint of excellent technique and fust-rate theatrical presentation here was also the conviction of a genuinely big creative talent It was merely incidental that some of the' numbers were less impressive than others i wh.it was important was that the pro- i gram as a whole vibrated with a fine and simple emotional sincerity Here were flic solidity, the substance that had previously been missing, and their presence on tlie scene had been accomplished with no loss of the distinctive buoyancy and dthcacy that had been there before Perhaps the mast charming dance on the progt am was the opening number, or w.o, it only more striking by very reason of Hie fact that it came first Its title Dante the Early Morning," and it created a mood that combined stillness and vitality with the utmost subtlety Simple In composition, built entirely of that kind of movement which grows only out of ptrsonal explorations of the spirit, it awakened anawarenexs of those Intangible exper.ence of living which only works of genuine art can awaken At The opposite pole was the second dance Paeans with its great demands on technique and its expansiveness of mood And throughout the program there was constant variation of subject matter, of formal treatment, of teeiing In tne Two Sarabandes to music of Correlh there was pure design colored by feeling, in the Elegy there was pure feeling abstracted into design In Sinister Resonance" and more especially in Fire Cycle" one made certain reservation Here were seen remnants of past methods rather than the fresh creative sphlt of a new approach But both dances were extremly well composed and authoritative, and the final movement of Fire Ritual, which closed the program, restored in full the authentic quality which its earlier movements had sacrificed There are still problems in Miss Flade's path. For one thing, she has not yet freed herself sufficiently from her music.

In two of her dances, Obesslon of the Spiral" and Elegy," the brevity of the music forced her to a conclusion before she had developed her material as fully as it warranted In both cases it was ev-traordmarly real and rich material, and to deprive it of the fullness of manipulation of which it was worthy was manifestly unfair to it This is an unusual fault, for it is far more common to find the dancer eager to spread his material as far as it will go and beyond. For another thing, there is to be seen here and there a trace of emotion that has not been externalized, that is still being experienced by the dancer as she dances instead of being projected in its full strength through her movement. The mask of the artist is penetrated by the personal feeling of the human being, who should remain Invisible behind the artist; the dancer is stepping into our function as spectators and cheating us a bit or our rights. But both these difficulties will inevitably be ironed out, for there Is a keen penetration in Miss Flades approach to her work, and behind It a strong drive. There is a possibility that during the coming season she will be able to make a flying trip from her classes at Mills College in California lor a recital or two in New York.

Certainly it Is hoped that tire West will not swallow her up for too long, for she is an artist whose work has a direct appeal for the New York public, and one awaits with Interest her next appearance here.
