Marie--Great Lakes shipping season is on its "last legs" as steamers return from Lake Superior two or three days late as result of the wintry which, swept the lake during the last few days. Some of the mariners stuck to the job of transporting grain and other freight, however, despite sharp boosts in insurance rates on vessels at midnight Tuesday.

Jumping freight rates for grain cargoes proved an inducement to continue shipping. Captain A. H. Blackwell of the Algoma Central steamer Algosoo which arrived in the Canadian Sault with a cargo of scrap iron from Duluth. said that lie had encountered "the worst storm in a year," while on Lake Superior.

Westerman, head of the fish division, Michigan state department of conservation, discussed the investigation now in progress in an effort to set up some regulation satisfactory to both commercial fishermen and sportsmen regarding commercial fishing in the Qreat Lakes. Westerman is accompanied on his trip of investigation by Dr.

John Van Oosten, in charge ol the Great Lakes fishing investigation for the United States bureau of fisheries. At the last session of the legislature, Westerman said, a bill was introduced providing that nets of commercial fishermen be prohibited anywhere on the Great Lakes SET ELECTRIC RATES Negaunee--Officials of the Negaunee city light department put into effect new commercial and residential light rates, and announced the adoption of a one-meter system for Negaunee homes and business establishments. The resident rate for the first 50 kilowatts is identical with the old schedule, .07 cents for the first 25 kilowatt hours, .05 cents for the next 25. The new rate will be .02 cents for every kilowatt hour over 50, thus supplanting the old figure of .03 cents.
