IRONWOOD DAILY GLOBE, IRONWOOD. MICH. FIVB Signer of Declaration Had Finnish Ancestors John Morton's Great Grand- lather Went to Sweden from Finland. In his publication on "John Morton," Pennsylvania signer of the Declaration of Independence -translated from the Finnish version into English by Dr. John Wargelin, president of Suomi college at Hancock--the Rev.

S. Ilmonen of Port Bragg, brings out the fact, gained after laborious research work, that John Morton was of Finnish descent, the descendant of Finnish refugees who settled in Sweden and in the course of time migrated to the colony of Delaware in 1841, later to settle in Pennsylvania. It will be recalled that it was John Morton who uttered the last word in the vote on the Declaration of Independence. It was he who broke the tie of the delegation of Pennsylvania for independence or continued allegiance to the king after all the other colonies had stood out strongly for independence. On his deathbed he said, "The time will come, when it will be acknowledged that in voting for the independence of America, I performed the most renowned act of my life." Were First Settlers "The first group of Finnish men women and children," writes Mr.

Ilmonen. "arrived on the shores of Delaware in They came from Varmland and other provinces of central Sweden where they had been driven away from their woodland homes. In reality they were the first permanent settlers in Delaware, for others who preceded them came here as traders or soldiers or officers in the employment of the Swedish government and returned to Sweden after a period of longer or shorter duration. But the group under consideration began to clear the fertile soil of their new homeland for cultivation and to build their humble homes upon it "Martti Martinen, who was a native of Finland from the parish of Rautalampi, and who became the forefather of the Morton family of Delaware and the great grandfather of John Morton, the statesman, was among those first Finnish colonists. For period of about 15 years since the founding of the colony new settlers were sent from Sweden in twelve expeditions.

Many Were Finns "The Finns composed a large majority of each expedition. Others were unwilling to migrate into a strange land which provided neither comforts nor security. Because the Finns made use of a peculiar mean-? of removing the forest, the so-called svedjebruket (agriculture by burning) in Varmland and because of other reasons, they were driven away from their woodland dwellings. For these reasons they occupied a unique position in Sweden. "We must not, however, lose sight of the historical perspective in passing judgment upon that period.

The Pilgrims and Puritans, who settled Massachusetts about twenty years earlier than the Swedes came to Delaware, had beei persecuted in their homeland and were obliged finally to leave England. The Huegenots of France were compelled to seek refuge in foreign lands and some of them settled in South Carolina The first in the neighboring colony of Maryland consisted of another persecuted group. And finally, the Quakers, who founded Philadelphia in 1681 under the leadership of William Penn, sought religious freedom in America Yet all these social injustices have been shaped by the hand of Almighty God, the Director of the destinies of nations, lor the good of America and the blessing of mankind. "I wish to acknowledge with sincere gratitude the work of Doctor John Wargelin, my colleague and former classmate, for his valuable work as the translator and reader of the proofs of this treatise." Biography of Morton Regarding general facts concerning the biography of John Morton, Mr. Ilmonen says: "John Morton, of Finnish descent, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

He was born on the estate of the Marttmen family in the township of Ridley, Delaware county, Pennsylvania, 1724. The colonial style house, in which Morton was born, has remained as a valuable relic up to the present time. It is situated on the Queen's Highway the fork where the road turns to Chester, about twelve miles from the center of Philadelphia and three miles from the city of Chester. The oldest name of this place was Kalkeon Hook, adjoining Ammasland, in TJnlvertlty of Wisconsin, Films for geology 3.00 Total It was moved by Mr. Kelt Mttt the Will paid since last meeting be I the bills presented thU "nesting be sppreved and paid.
