Intent Croning Gazette, November 11, 1475. Restoration May Result In Problems WESTMORELAND, Calif. (AP) The establishments along Back Street are rundown these days, but some people here want to restore it as a memorial to what it once was: a prosperous red-light district. In its heyday, Back Street had 20 brothels My Blue Heaven, Anita's, The Green Spot, Bluebird and others along both sides of one block. The sheriff in this small desert town decided to lay down the law in 1955 and shut them down, but some of the names are still visible on the rundown stucco and frame buildings.

"1 wish they would restore it." said Carole Terrell, 68, who ran a brothel here from 1941 until the shut down. "Maybe they would hire me as a guide. I'd tell them what it was really like. Oh. times were good on this street.

We thought the good times would never end." Miss Terrell said she'd like to fun the Ice cream parlor If the street is restored. "Incredible as it may seem, in the middle of all the houses and saloons on the street there was an ice cream parlor run by one of the madams," she re. called. Mayor Tony Belew said the city has been turned down on its requests for state and federal I money to renovate the district. "We're not financially able to do it ourselves," he added.

But Belew still has hopes of restoring the old brothels but not their original purpose. He would keep the old names but turn them into restaurants, boutiques and gift shops.
