Sewing Needle Has Fascinating History rr.Arair rrtf i By CLAIRE COX TORFINGTON, Conn. (UPI) Consider the lowly sewing needle, you stkch those clothes for the children. take for granted a product Jn use since prehistoric times. But 1 was amazed to learn that it takes different kinds of sewing machine needles to produce today's consumer goods. Furriers use a needle less than an inch long to stitch mink skins together, for example, while a dou- qualities of wash wear tab- ble-pomted needte j(h the eye in rics.

At one company which produces several million needles every day The problem was to find a needle that would not get hot and melt the material as it stitched at a rate of up to 6,600 times a minute. "Needles of the future might be coated with certain friction-reducing compounds as a self-lubricant to aid needle penetration and thread handling," said Clarence BVCry Q3V 1 a team of 100 researchers has per- Rowe sales manager the com- 1 I a needle tailored to the Old-Fashioned Colors Are Vsed For Yule Decorations By SHELLEY SINGER United Press International CHICAGO (UPI)- Manufactur- rs already have planned what lomemakers will be buying for Christmas decorations.

The word for the luture: nostalgia for the past. Manufacturers showing at Hie Gift and Glassware market featured old fashioned colors and shapes, fragile angels and fantasy. The story book quality of one Christmas tree should please adults as well as children. The white icicled tree is trimmed with cryslar prisms, ice blue sequins, jewels and frosted ornaments. Wreaths and table sprays are bon-bon colored to match the candies and cakes of Christmas: Some tree ornaments in the bauble and bangle style are touched with moss-like velvet.

Velvet Ball Baroque velvet balls are trimmed with gold ribbons and simulated jewels. Ribbon wound shapes of the 1900 period are ornate but elegant. And angels, of course. From Italy come tiny carved miniatures. From Taiwan, gaily dressed figures with silk embroidered wings.

From Germany delicate gold foil angels with a lighter- than-air look, suspended in clear glass to hang on the tree. Nativity figures from Mexico have a worn and aged appearance, They're shadowy gray, highlighted with gold, and Took as though centuries of dust had aged them in a forgotten corner of a cathedral. Reproduction An order of Franciscan Fathers in northern Italy has created a collection, of papier mache reproductions of Biblical figures. They have used a centuries old glazing formula to achieve a look of antiquity. Colors are somber and faces and robes are delicately sculptured.

You'll also see in the stores, in just a few months, decorated place mats, large candles with new holder bases, espaliered Christmas greens to fit flat against the wall, fiber glass snowballs, and angels and snowmen lighted from within. 4MS Report of Condition of the Peoples National Bank of Lebanon, in the State of Pennsylvania, at the Close of Business on September 28, 1962. The tufting needle is 10 times larger than fur needle. A curved needle used for attaching linings must be engineered carefully to assure accuracy.

A single operation such as closing the toe of a man's sock may require a special needle with double curve. Odd-Shaped Needle Rowe points with particular pleasure to a fluting needle used to form the pleats at the back of collegiate or ministerial gowns. This needle is three feet long and can be bent into a half circle. It has points on both ends, the hole being in the middle. Most needles today are made of steel and ere nickel or chrome- plated.

The first needles were fashioned of fishbone, animal bone or ivory and are believed to have had a hook instead of an eye. Steel needles were introduced to Europe by the Moors. They were made in Germany as early as 1370 and irj. England in 1650. Rowe said that all needles used by American housewives in sewing and darning are imported from England, Germany or Japan.

Neither Rowe nor anyone else questioned could explain why no needles for household use are made in this country. "It's just one of those things," a spokesman said.
