The Brooklyn Citizen, Monday, August 30, 1943 SCREEN THEATRE NOTES 4 RADIO IN NEW SCREEN THRILLER lead Martha 'Driscoll and John Garfield in a scene from "The Fallen Sparrow," coming to the RKO Albee Theatre on Wednesday. The associate feature will be "Adventures of a Rookie," co-starring Alan Carney and Wally Brown, "Watch on the Rhine" Screen Version of Lillian Hellman's Successful Stage Play of the Same Name, One of the Treats of the New Theatrical Season-Bette Davis, Paul Lukas Lucile Watson and George Coulouris Head Fine Cast By EDGAR PRICE Lillian Hellman's successful stage play, "Watch on the Rhine," presented here in the Spring of 1941, has made into a distinguished picture, thanks to the Warner Brothers, Heerman Shumlin, who directed it, and a top-notch cast headed by Bette Davis, Paul Lukas, Lucile Watson, George Coulouris, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Beulah Bondi and Donald Woods. At the Manhattan Strand, where the screen adaptation in playing to large audiences, "Watch on the Rhine" proves itself to be a dramatic and moving story. Adapted by Dashiell Hammett with additional scenes and dialogues by Miss Hellman, here is a picture that is even forceful than in its original form. Miss Hellman, one of the country's BETTE DAVIS leading playwrights, (she penned 'The Children's Hour" and "The Little to mention a couple of her outstanding stage hits calls a Fascist a Fiscist and minces no words in so doing.

"Watch on the Rhine' is 1 the story of Kurt Muller, German, married to an American woman, and their three children. Opposed to Fascism, he bears bullet scares and broken hands for having had the courage and the daring to speak his mind, Now he is in this country with his family trying to raise money to carry on his work when he returns to Germany. A Rumanian, literally a man without a country, guest in the home of Muller's mother-in-law, discovers his "underground" connections and threatens to reveal his identity to the German Embassy. All this, of course, takes place before our entrance into the war. Realizing that there is only one thing for him to do, Muller kills the rat and throws himself on the mercy of his wife's mother and brother, who by now have been fully awakened to the fact that Fascism is knocking at their very doors, Although two years have elapsed since Miss Hellman's play was first seen on Broadway and much has happened since then, "Watch on the Rhine" as powerful story today as it was in 1941.

It is deeply stirring tale, beautifully told and acted for all it in worth, which is plenty, by an unusually fine cast.
