Aristocrat of The Corset World SAN FRANCISCO Sept As a result of a mass meeting of grape growers and wine men held under the auspices of the Grape Protective association telegrams protesting against the proposed federal tax on light dry wines were sent today to President Wilson and California congressional delegation in Washington The text of the message follows: growers of California are loyal and willing to bear a reasonable burden that may be assessed upon them to meet emergency of financial conditions of our government but a tax on light dry wines of 20 cents per gallon by the ways and means committee is confiscatory It would destroy our industry and little revenue would be realized makers are refusing to buy grapes if 20 cents per gallon is levied on light dry wines and most of the crop now ripe for harvesting will be lost respectfully ask your immediate action to save our crops and the committee should be requested to distinguish between light dry wines used by the laboring California has 15612 teachers and 501021 pupils according to the annual report of Job Wood Jr statistician in tne office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Edward Hyatt Wood is now completing the details of his report preparatory to the meeting of the state board of education The figures show California to have one of of the greatest educational systems In the United States The elementary schools have 12266 teachers of whom 1162 are men and 11104 are women a proportion of nine to one- In the kindergarten department there are 355 instructors all of them being women The state high schools have 2997 teachers 1206 of them being men and 1791 women There is a gain of 1092 teachers for the fiscal year In the elementary schools of the state are 422024 pupils of whom 210-6 are boys and 191348 girls The kindergarten has an enrollment of 13-070 6532 boys and 6538 girls In the high schools enrollment of 65927 the girls lead in number by nearly 4000 the figures being 35008 and 30919 respectively Each teacher in the state has an average of 49 pupils to instruct Tin average daily attendance in the schools for the fiscal year just ending is 374493 divided as follows: ele mentary 319244 Kindergarten 6937 and high school 48312 A gain in daily attendance of 28050 is noted year has been said Hyatt expectations have been passed and from all indications the coming year will show a still greater increase The school system has been so systematized it is an easy matter to increase the attendance The increase is noticeable in all parts of the Hosiery Engineer Clark returned accepted although he will probably finish out the season Trouble between Chance and President Farrell has existed for some time Chance claims that the club was not willing to spend money for new players and that he had no way of building up the team Chance sent Farrell a letter from Washington ask ing to be relieved of the managership by September 15th and also requested that he be paid for on property within the district Attorney A Carlson representing Mrs Cora Lutz ot Berkeley who owns 160 acres on the Coffee road north of Modesto com plained that her land was assessed too high but when the assessments on the land in the neighborhood were shown it was proven that the Berkeley lady was paying only her just proportion The other complainant was Dr Moore who owns forty acres of land He asserted that ten acres was so high It could not be irrigated An in-estigation showed that seven acres of his land because it was too high wa being assessed at half its value the custom of the board whereupon Di Moore was also satisfied The board adjourned until Friday when a regular meeting in addition to the equalization work will be held BLOODLESS PAINLESS HIM NEWS NOTES SACRAMENTO Sept 15 Represen-atives of 30 county branches of the Protective league of California met in Sacramento yesterday and after organizing on a permanent basis adopted plans to oppose vigorously the proposed universal eight-hour law the so-called home rule in taxation proposal the water commission act and several other measures declared detrimental to the interests of agriculture in California The meeting was the first of the general committee which is composed of members delegated by county organizations Nearly every county norii of Tehachapi was represented- It was resolved to continue the organization on a permanent basis and maintain suitable headquarters at Sa -ramento and with active representation from every county After the campaign against the proposed amendments and statutes is over it is the purpose of the league to keep in touch with the legislature and oppose before that body any bills that threaten the farmer The directorate was enlarged from seven to fifteen members in order to give representation to all sections of the state The new board comprises: McKevitt Sacramento president Hecke Woodland first ice-president Mrs Emily Hoppin Yolo second vice-president Graham San Jose George Cutter Sacramento Pierce Davis Guiberson Corcoran N- Hawkins Hollister Cooper Fresno and i Wilder directors Arthur Dunn was made secretary and manager There are three directors to be
