Republic had originally announced the picture as "Yanks Over the Burma Road." But MGM, two weeks later, changed the title of a Larraine Day picture to a "Yank on the Burma Road" and Republic was stuck.

So it changed the title to "Yanks Over Singapore." Then the war situation made it apcertain that Singapore was pear doomed. It was just about then that the American Volunteer Group WAS starting to make history. The studio decided then to use the Chinese name for these heroic flyers, "The Flying Tigers." Well, the tide of events has emblazoned the Flying Tigers in world-wide headlines. Serving as technical advisers on the picture are Larry Moore, 22, who was staff secretary to Colonel Chennault, and Ken Sanger, 23, who was radio technician with the AVG. They returned to the United tates, were interviewed by a Los Angeles paper.

Producer Eddie Grainger read their story and signed them Moore and Sanger were amazed up. that the people in the U. S. had heard of them. The boys figured they just a small unheralded unit.

They know different know. John Wayne, John Carroll and Anna Lee head the cast of the Republic picture. The studio is so enthused over the possibilities it offers that thy ar spnding mildollar in bringing it to the lion screen. Unable to secure planes for the the studio built its own out picture, of non-priority materials, wood, canVAS, etc. The next problem was transport.

This was too big for the studio to build, so they chased a crackpot inventor in San Francisco who had built a transport plane which the Army had turned down. The studio rented it from him. Republic lined up the planes on the back lot, with a Jap plane which the studio had built from an obsolete plane. Regular P-40's on their way to scout duty over the Pacific saw the planes and dove down over the lot with engines roaring. When they saw it was studio lot, they passed the word around and all day long P-40'8 roared over Republic to have a looksee.

A phrase which will catch the public's fancy is "Ding Hao," the Chinese equivalent of "Thumbs Up" which is used by the real Tigers in Burma. Brooklyn is brought into the picture. The story was supplied by Moore and Sanger, and the studio thought so well of it that it was incorporated in the Alm. A scene shows Paul Kelly and Gordon Jones returning to AVG headquarters after A gruelling fight which saw them down nine Jap planes. As soon as they land they walk toward each other, and continue an argument which evidently had started before they went up.

"I tell you," says Kelly, "if the cops hadn't got in Owens way, he'd have thrown Henrich out by ten feet." "Ah." sneers Jones. "Mickey couldn't have caught Casey's pitch with a bushel basket." "Rio Rita," current at Loew's Metropolitan, affords the two comedians and opportunity to dish out theb rand of comedyp for which they have become famous. And the two go to town, particualrly Costello. Originally produced on the Broadway stage by the late Flo Ziegfeld and later on the screen with Wheeler and Woolsey in the two principal roles, "Rio Rita" wears Two of the sonb numbers from the original remain and they seem as fresh today as when Arst heard.

They are "Rio Rita," the title song, and "The Song of the Rangers." The screenplay prepared by Richard Connell and Gladys Lehman, has been changed to suit presentday conditions. A group of Nazi plotters, bent on Nifth column activities, are nipped in the bud. There really is no much to the plot when boiled right down; merely the skeleton of a story on which to hang the Abbott and Costello, gags. -And there are laughs galore. M-G-M has surrounded the stars, with an A-1 production.

Pandro 8. Berman having seen to it that the boys had everything that money could buy. S. Sylvan Simon's direction is fast. The romantic leads are capably handled by Kathryn Grayson and John Carroll, both of whom do full justice to the musical numbers.

One of the highlights of the film is the work of Eros Volusia, Brazilian dancer, who scores an outstanding and personal triumph. If you enjoy the antics of Abbott and, Costello, and who doesn't these days, you're certain to like "Rio Rita."
