11 STANDARD UNION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1931, Hello, 1932 COMEDIAN IWRAMMk In Hollywood With EILEEN PERCY (Former Filin Htar and Staff Correspondent of Tiie Slumlord Colon) I POPULAR I i Beatrice Lillie and Bert Lahr at Their. Best in a Merry and Mad Holiday Revue HELLO, 1932 The Majestic presents variety re rue, with Beatrice Lillie, Bert Lahr, Robert Chisholm, Russ Brown, Mary Dowling, Jerry Divine, Chester Fredericks and Artiey George. Dances by Mary Read. Staged by William Ritter. In the Majestio Theater.

Following a custom inaugurated last year, the Majestic Theater presented a show last night designed to give Brooklyn an opportunity to welcome the New Year in proper style. Using the title Hello, 1932, a show was assembled that contains enough pure gold, principally in the persons of Beatrice Lillie and Bert Lahr, to evoke the wildest enthusiasm of a large first-night audience. It' is, by and large, great enter-' tatnment. Indeed, so far as we are concerned, ten minutes of Beatrice LUlle is a good enough show for anyone at any time; and the peculiar genius of Bert Lahr wears well, even after having seen him in vaudeville and on the screen only recently. Varied Happenings Mark Movie Calendar Bert Lahr, one of the better stage funsters recently seen In the celluloid "Flying High, Is back in his old lair.

Lily Damita Featured In Celluloid Musical With Charlie Ruggles "He Met a French Girl" a new type of screen musical romance with a European background, is to be produced at Paramounts Hollywood studios. Lily Damita, recently borrowed by Paramount from Samuel Goldwyn, will appear in the leading feminine role. The leading male role will be played by Gary Grant Charlie Ruggles Is to play one of the two major comedy roles In He Met a French Girl, which will be directed by Prank Tuttle. George Marlon, Jn. has been signed to write the screen play.

This circumlocution Is hereby set forth merely In amazement that such fundamental bigotry and village snooping actually does exist For be it noted that St. John has written a play that speaks with authority, with understanding, and with deep knowledge of character. If what he says Is so, the old farm, even way out in Kansas, isnt what it used to be. One actual lynching party for a second act climax (with good acting by Alonzo Thayer, a Negro), and a near lynching bee to top off the heightened suspense of the third act make this Western triangle a twisted "Desire in the Com Fields." As for the show as a whole, the formula is easy. A few separate and individual numbers, a skit or two, a chorus, and there you are. The formula has been used hereabouts a good deal lately, and there is no reason why it should not be employed again and again, for it is good enough to give a background (or entertainers that audiences like to hear and see. The show opened, as all these shows do, with a chorus, in this itase, an ensemble of particularly Yapely, graceful, agile and energetic maidens, who wander in and out from time to time in numerous changes of costumes and lack thereof. Two pretty young things billed as Pam and Peggy Garvin danced, played the mandolin, turned handsprings and sang from time to time, and they were pretty good Then there was a highly energetic young man named Chester Fredericks with boundless energy who danced magnificently but who marred his dancing with Bn act in shockingly bad taste.

There was also a team consisting of Russ Brown and Coletta Ryan, whom we didnt like so much, but the audience didn't mind them That was about all, except for the three headliners but thejr were enough for any man's show. Mr Chisholm sang a French song in poilus uniform, and "The Whip" from "The Golden Dawn, in which he cracked a black-snake whip over the naked bodies of the lovely girls of the chorus, and it was quite swell to hear him sing. Bert Lahrs act was Identical with his recent vaudeville offering, and as good as it ever was. But it was Miss Lillie who was worth all the trouble the audience took to get to the theater That woman is a genius; a smile, a toss of the head, a lift of the eyebrow, and the audience nearly perishes with laughter. She sang a number of songs from what she called her "offensive repartee, and we were limp with laughter when she concluded.

Miss Lillie's genius cannot be described; one must see and hear her to believe what she can do. W. M. F. CUKOR DIRECTS ADAMS NOVEL George Cukor today was assigned to direct The Flagrant Years at the Paramount studios in Hollywood The cast will be headed by Phillips Holmes and Carole Lombard.

Robinson, now vacationing in Europe, will begin work on his next picture. Two Seconds, on Feb. 1. This will be an adaptation of the play of the same title which had a Broadway run this fall la the 'Rite Theater. Robinson, accompanied by his wife, the formei Gladys Lloyd, sailed for abroad a few weeks ago, (Sylvia Field) and the neighbors.

It is the city slicker (Eric Dressier), hiring out to help with the threshing, who shows her that her love for him can be transcendent. This, of course, arouses the wrath of the neighbors, particularly Red Hitchcock and Chris Nelson (Messrs Morris and Pollock), as earnest a pair of witch burners as ever graced a Ku Klux meeting. To all this the husband (Victor Kilian) reacts with a noble heart, even to staving off the lynchers with a gun and to letting the young couple go out of his life with his blessing. There are many shadings of homespun characterization in the play. If it seems antedated in these days of the radio, the automobile and the Kansas City Star, there Is compensation in sustained melodrama and In acting and direction It is dialectic, also, and flavored with country gossip.
