Recent years bave witnessed the entry of a number of carriage makers Into the automobile Industiy. Yet It Is to be doubted if one man in fifty realizes how inuca the motorcar owes to the vehicle that Is now regarded as its bumble predecessor. The trend from the carriage business to that of the automobile probably interpreted as a turning from the old aud obsolete to the new and popular. This probably Is true. But It it also true that the comfort that Is a prominent feature of the good motorcar of today bad Its origin In the comfort that characterizes the well built carriage.

Nearly everybody remembers the tonneau bodies of the earlier automobiles, especially those who were forced by circumstances to occupy the rear "seati." These were. In fact, mere shelve set across the rear corners of the body, with the entrauce door between. Comfort In these Hardly. It wag more like torture, what with the short wheel-bases which w-jre the, rula and atltf, hard-ridlug springs. G.

A. Matthews, head of the Jackson Automobile Company, built carriages for twenty years before the motorcar was born as a commercial possibility. Each morning he stepped from tne horseblock Into the comfortable back teat of his surrey. The entrauce was wide; the step convenient. He applied the same idea to four-passenger automobile, added doors, and the first side-entrance tonneau In America was the result.

Thus the'Jockson made Its first contribution to convenience and riding ease us applied to the automobile. This was In 1904, after the Jackson had been building cars for two years. The 1902 car was a liberal education In The following, year the company produced a -car that astonished everybody who saw or heard of it because it actually would run for many miles without expert attention. It wasn't a quiet car, aud it wasn't so very comfortable. But it would go and that was a real achievement.

So it enn readily be imagined how radical seemed the construction of a side entrance -tonneau In the following year. The automobile had progressed to the potnt where more or less confident dependence could be placed In Its ability to start and keep going' And the first step had been taken' toward comfort. With a side entrance, a regular rear sent was made possible a real seat. for large hats. The seats are so desigoed that there Is very little rub and sway In riding over rough places a detail of design protecting the most delicate gown.

S. Menasco Demonstrates the Advantages of "Underslung" Cars. Recognizing that cars which appeal to the woman not only mean added sales, but greatly increased popularity, motor car builders bave left nothing undone to clinch the approval of women buyers. That feminine taste would dominate certain phases of design was realized years ago, but the season of 1913 has produced a new set of conditions where those makers who would hold feminine' favor were obliged to go beyond the details of Interior treatment for women who merely buy and provide greater convenience and comfort for women who drive. Undoubtedly the greatest 1 single achievement aiding women motorists has been the perfection of the self-starting system In conjunction with the left-side drive and center control.

Without, these features a motoring trip unaided by man was almost sure to result in work that was not only difficult, but undignified. Now, however, the woman motorist may stop and start as often as she likes without manual work. Those who drive White By K. C. Pardee.

"I believe that no automobile man in the country has had a more varied experience, and particularly with popular-priced cars, than I have had," says Colonel K. C. Pardee. New York distributor for the Brlggs-Detrolter Company. "As a result of those years 'of experience and tbey date back to the days when most of the automobile dealers, of the present were still boys In school I believe that I bave gained the ability to recognize the car the people want; and I believe I have also got a mighty good insight as to the way an automobile industry ought, to be conducted.

"So when the Detrolter first came to my attention some months ago, I sat up and took notice. I studied the car pretty thoroughly and watched closely Its performance in the hands of some New York motorists. In common with a lot of other dealers, I couldn't help wondering how It could all be done at the price. This led me to make Inquiries. And before I got through I found the answer.

feature which' manufacturers are giving greater attention. The exhibit shows that manufacturers are not only meeting requirements as they are made known, but they are anticipating many small needs that were formerly overlooked In the effort to accomplish the big things. Taking the closed car, for Illustration, It Is a fact that style, comfortable riding, fine finish Inside and outside and appropriate fitments were formerly the only essentials from the buyer's viewpoint. Then there Is still a point left about the car, to which he rather wants to pin hig laith. "What kind of servlce-to-owners does the Ranney Company give?" He asks when he can get delivery of his car. You will find that the majority of New Yorkers Intuitively hunt out these points in deciding the selection of any automobile.

1 Is the car beautiful In appearance? 2 Has It euftVtent strength and power to meet my needs? 3 How economical Is Its operation? 4 Is the design correct, so that wires, rods, "props" and bric-a-brac are eliminated? 6 Is the car responsive to Its control apparatus? 6 Is It easy to handle? 7 Are the dealer and manufacturer reliable? 8 Does the dealer give good service-to owners?
