1 LEGAL NOTICES Proud Patrician and Pioneer The Premiere Society Notes By LUCILE MINTZ RADIO PROGRAMS FOR TODAY By EDGAR PRICE Norman Bel Geddes Brings Iron Men, a Story of Brave Souls, to the Longacre Theatre Stage Settings, as is Usual with All Geddes Productions, Stanl Out. Norman Bel Geddes, whose production of Sidney Kingsleys play, Dead End, enabled that producer to Construct on the stage of the Belasco Theatre a real, honest-to-good-ness dead-end street, brought his first play of the season to town last evening. It is Francis Gallaghers Iron Men and it opened at the Longacre Theatre. This time Mr. Geddes permits you to see a skyscraper rising majestically to the heavens, as well as an East Side barroom, with sawdust on the floor and cuspidors adding to the realism of the place.

As a scenic designer, Mr. Geddes has few, if any equals. Too bad the same cannot be said of Mr. Gallagher as a playwright but then Iron Men is his first effort and he does show pronrse. "Iron Men Is the story of those brave souls who work and sweat on steel girders high abovq the IRON MEN, a play In tbr acts and six.

Mr. Sheriff is the playwright of Journey Tickets for It Can't Happen Here, to open at the Majestic Theatre on Oct. 27, are selling at the rate of one hundred per hour, according to a report just received from the Majestic box office, whl.h opened yesterday morning at 9.

Before the opening of the Brooklyn Majestic box office 12,000 tickets had already been sold to theatre parties. This record advance sale is the greatest in the theatrical history of Brooklyn. Ninety Per Cent. American The Leslie Howard organization feels that it is about time to quiet two persistent rumors that have been going the rounds concerning Mr. Howard's forthcoming production of Hamlet.

One ij to the effect that the company is predominantly English. A caicful statistical survey shows that company and staff are about 90 per cent. American. The other rumor Is to the effect that Mr. Howard Is doing a some- street.

It tells particularly of a gang of laborers, whose boss Is Andy, just about tops In the business. Andy and his men have built up an enviable reputation for speed and accuracy. There Is no time to loaf If you arc a member of Andy's gang. Work Is as plentiful as milk and honey In the promised land. The boys all worship Andy and he isnt a bad sort when you get to know him.

Nils, one of his most able assistants, married to a timid wife, is about to get out of the business and settle down somewhere on a farm Andy, fearing that this will ruin the morale of his men and realizing that Nils cannot be replaced, plays a mean trick on Nils and his wife. He leads the square-head, thats Nils, to believe that the litle woman is a strumpet, with the results that Nils beats her to death and then commits suicide. Andy goes completely Insane and the final scene has him high up on the sixty-third floor of a skyscraper under construction, frowned upon by his former co-workers. You think he is going to fall, but he doesn't. He climbs down by way of the ladder, bringing the play to a most unsatisfactory ending.

In reading the manusernpt of Iron Men, Mr. Geddes saw an opportunity to play around some tricky stage designs. He does a most realistic job In that respect His skeleton of a skyscraper looks like the real McCoy and his barroom scene is a natural. The chief weakness of "Iron Men" Is the play Itself. For the role of Andy, Mr.

Geddes has chosen William Haade, a member of Local No. 40 of the International Association of Bridge Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers. It was as a member of Local No. 40 that he was working on a building when Mr. Geddes happened to indulge in a bit of climbing.

They met mid-way on the girder and Mr. Geddes lured him into the cast of Iron Men. Considering that Iron Men Is his first part on the professional stage, he does right well not only by Mr. Geddes and Mr. Gallagher, but by himself.

Harold Moffett, as Nils, and Richard Taber, as Scratch, both gave good accounts of themselves, as do Clark Twelvetrees, Frank Jaquet and the others, including Gloria Blondell, sister of the well-known movie star. Except for Mr. Geddes' stirring settings, "Iron Men left me as cold as a steel girder on a winter's day, whereas, I am sure, Mr. Gallagher meant to make it as alive as a powerhouse. Oh, Mr.
