Sugar sold down 44 after tea minute of trading, and there wag a loss of I on nominal dealings In Amalgamated Copper. The tone of the market became on the whole soft. The bond list was steady, Its principal feature being the demand for Erie general liens.

The general stock market has been languid this morning, with a heavy tone revalllng a large part of the first hour, fhe declines, howevtr, Were generally confined to fractions. An exceptional loss of 1 per cent, was shown by St. Paul, but a substantial rally soon followed. Th Erics continued the leading feature In strength, with an advance of 114 per cent. In first preferred and 144 in second preferred.

Missouri Pacifio also showed a hardening tendency on a revival of rumors -that tha Gould Southwestern system was to undergo Important financial and traffic readjustments. Illinois Central mads a full recovery of an early decline. Sugar lost 144 Per cent, on somewhat disturbing Washington advices with regard to the development of fresh opposition to Cuban, reciprocity. Amalgamated Copper was somewhat heavy In anticipation of declaration of the usual dividend. American Ice preferred advanced 144 -and common 44 per Cent.

For th slmpls reason tiat hs wa8 engaged to conduct German opera, and that whatever else he may do is incidental, the racial tost of the ability of Alfred Herts lies Iq the performance of the Ring, th prologue to Which, Das was given last evening 'At the-Metropolitan Opera House.

Equally meritorious representations of Die Wsl-kuete, "Siegfried and 'Gotterdaem-merung" will establish his reputation as ths best Wagnerian conductor In many seasons writer on musical matters, like every one else, alms to tell the public what It Is most Interested In, and to the average opera patron It Is ths soloists Who s're of' chief Importance, What Mme. This view Is perhaps the rational one wheit the Old style "quartet operas 'are being considered, for one or two singers In oountry, at least dominate the stage, tle chorus merely serves to fill In tha stage picture, and the conductor Is relegated to the' position ot an accompanist In the Ring operas where Wagner reached the culmination of his art, ths conductor Is first In Importance, Each of the principals must be anartlat, but even Wotan oanot held the centre of th stag for any length of time.

The 'Interdependence ot the singers Is complete, ana no small part of the story Is told by tha orchestra. Will Afford Dr, Fismer Larger Op- portunitjes3 fu At ths annual meeting In the Kopkffti Street Presbyterian Church, yesterday th Rev. Arnold W. Ph. tendered his resignation of the pastorate he has tilled for hearty twelve years, in order to accept the call extended to hint by the Board -of Directors of the Bloomfield Theological Seminary, New. Jersey, to take the chair of New Testament Theology and The letter of resignation read by Dr.

Fismer was In part ae follows: "My Dear Friends and Members of My Beloved Congregation, It Is with a mingling of sorrow and hope that I apprise you of a decision which feel Is of deep concern to you, and which I have long been loath' te communicate to you. You have known of the call which was extended to me recently by the Board of 'Directors of our Bloomfleld Seminary. The call coming to me as It does with much urgency and enthusiasm from mv honored and esteemed alma mater, I felt constrained to glvs It serious consideration. "From the first the thought of leaving you, my beloved people, has made ms shrink and filled me with sadness. But I have felt I must lift tha question away from persona) considerations, and, assisted by the judgment of others, under1 the direction of the Divine mind.

Seek to view It In Its bearing upon usefulness, and so discover the path of duty. A prayerful and thoughtful examination of all the considerations thst have weight only deepened and confirmed the inward conviction that I should accept the call aa coming from the Lord. It was In obedlenee- to the Inward sense of duty that I came to be your pastor in order to rescue and restore this church; It Is In obedience to that same Inward Sense of i duty that I am now constrained to leave you. "Trusting that' a divine Providence guides me, I herewith tender my resignation from the pastorate of this church. Begging you to accept it, and to unite with me (n my request to the Presbytery of Brooklyn for a dissolution of the pastoral relation existing between this church and myself this dissolution to take effect on the last Sunday of the month of March.

The congregation listened to 'the reading of the letter with visible grief, many being affected to tears. After the reading John Ritter, elder, said that he felt certain that every member of the church would gladly put forth every effort to dissuade their beloved pastor from leaving, but that he was convinced of the futility of such an effort, and therefore felt that Divine Providence was guiding him and bidding him go. Many others followed, giving expression to-their deep sense of loss, and bora testimony to' their pastors faithfulness and ability In every department of church worl; during these years of his pastorate. The proposition to change the grade ot 1 the kpproacltesrto the new Hamilton avt- nue bridge over the Gowanu Canal is meeting With -considerable opposition. Th owners of abutting property declare that 1 fthe grade of the avenue Is raised so as to allow fifty feet of clear space under the span of the bridge they will 1 practically be buried.

At the same time thye concede that the Improvement Is a very Important one, for If the bridge is raised proposed barges of much greater carrying capacity than those that are now In use will be able to pass through the canal. The project comes within the Jurisdiction of both the Prospect Heights and the Red Hook Local Boards. They held a joint meeting at Borough -Hall yesterday afternoon, but adjourned without action to Jan! 21. The grade to be established Is as follows: Intersection of Hamilton avenue and Bush street to be 0 5, as heretofore; thence 100 feet In a southerly direction to 'an elevation of 10.8 feet; thence 148 feet to an elevation of 13.90 feet; thence 213 feet to an elevation of 19 80 feet at the northern end ot the proposed new bridge. Beginning at the southern snd ot the proposed new bridge the elevation is 10.80 feet; thence 418 feet to an elevation of 8.50, and thence to the present grade of the avenue.

Beginning at the intersection of Bmlth and Bush streets the elevation of Spilth street la to be 8 thence southerly 185 feet to an elevation of 12.90 at the B. H. L. of Hamilton avenue. Beginning again at the Intersection of' Smith and Lorraine streets, elevation to be 11.00 southerly 238 feet to an elevation of 6.20 at the C.

L. of Creamer street. As to Lorraine street the elevation of the grade will begin at its Intersection with' Smith street. I The raising of the bridges over Go wanus Canal will follow ths Hamilton Avenue Improvement if the project Is-carried through, beginning With the onei at Ninth street. Then will come the Third Street.

Carroll street and Union street bridges. Public Works Commissioner Redfleld said to-day that all the people who use the canal and the bridges were heartily In favor of these Improvements, th only objectors being the owners of abutting property, which would be left about ten feet below the grades of the approaches. But the property owners, contlnuel Mr. Redfleld, are protected by damages. They will be awarded amounts large enough to cover the cost of raising their houses to the new street level.

I have asked a number of them whether they were opposed to the raising of the Ham-, ilton avenue bridge as a public Improvement, and they all acknowledged that the scheme was an excellent one from that point of view. dbe of the prihclpal objectors to th raising of the Hamilton avenue bridge 1 Frederick Nelson, of the coal firm of Nelson and Brothers, whose property will be'offected by the proposed Improve- mefit WASHINGTON', Jan. 15. Although the German. Government has Issued a formal denial that It is seeking to acquire Colombia's Interests In tha Panama Canal, there la no denial of the fact that a syndicate, largely mads up ot German capitalists, has been formed in Europe to purchase the Panama Canal property on March 5, just at soon as the option of the United States expires.

United States Minister Hart, at Bogota, baa reported to the State Department that Aha Influences of the Europe- an representatives there, Including those of Germany, has been exerted to prevent Colombia from signing a canal treaty with the United Btates, and that this Influence Is ths chief cause for Colombias Insistence' upon an annual rental of (600,000 for the canal territory and the Panama Railroad. MtnisterHart has Informed the State Department that Germany has been negotiating with Colombia for the lease or cession of a naval casting station, despite the knowledge that such action would be a direct violation' of the Monroe Doctrjne. Mr. Herran confirms this fact. It Is probable that some action will be taken in the Senate at an early date to serve notice-upon Colombia and the world In general, that the United States will not permit either a foreign government or corporation to secure control of the canal.

Cottoq opened firm, 1 to 4 points higher. Coming far better than expected English cables started a line of covering orders that sent the local market up sharply at the start. Liverpool advices also brought buying orders, but so much profit taking developed at the advance that uny material upturn was checked after the call. It was a nervous market, nevertheless, and considerably more active than yesterday. Subsequent Liverpool advices eased off slightly, reflecting an impression that the American response had been less vigorous than expected.

Estimated port receipt ware 80,000, against 88,000 last year. The weather was clear through the Bouth and a trifle wanner. Th market late In the morning was firm, though not particularly active. Strong bull support more than made amends for the lack of public buying orders, and ther was some' evidence of buying for th account of former Wall Street bear Kool Interests. Smaller commission ouses were sellers on the advance.

New Orleans was a fair buyer all the morning, particularly of May and July. Liverpool cables stated that the advance there was due to the reported burning of a cargo of 15,000 bale rout from the South to Manchester. Opening.
