This year's Cook- County tournament is being dedicated to Chick Evans who helped design the Columbus Park course 40 years ago. In the opening day foursome Evans played in an exhibition foursome that included Walter Crowe, 1919 Cook County champion; John Humphreys, 1921 champ, and Ted Lloyd who went on to win the Illinois State Park amateur tournament which was held at Columbus Park for a number of years, until 1932. (Marker Photo) By NAILS FLORIO JACK KERNAN, well-known area sports mentor who is ready to start his second year as St. Patrick High school athletic director, has lined up an.interesting grid schedule -for the Shamrocks. The Shamrocks, one of the four Christian Brothers schools which last spring: severed their affiliations with the Chicago Catholic league, will open with Lindbloom of the Public league on Saturday, Sept 16 at Kockne stadium.

Three of their remaining seven games will be against out- of-town teams. On Friday night, Sept. 29 they will meet the Boys Town team of Omaha, Neb. In Soldier field. On Sunday afternoon, Oct 15" they will entertain Messmer high school of Milwaukee on the Luther North field on the Northwest side.

Their grid finale will be against Griffin high of Springfield, HI. on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5 at Rockne field. Kernan, now an Oak Park resident, is a St. Mel alumnus and for many years lived at 219 N.

Karlov. TERRY whose bigger brother, JACK, will be assistant grid coach at St. Philip this season, is one of the bright sophomore grid products at Purdue University. Terry, who now stands six foot even "and tips the scales at 205, was a first string freshman gridder for the Boilermakers last year at the right halfback post. He is being used primarily as a blocking back.

The Marcoline brothers, if you're latecomers, tioth excelled for St Philip in their high school days. FISH STORY thaf true is one that you'll hear from Jim Obermaier, 5843 Rice. Youth, foundation to three swimming -events a part of take TO STIMULATE -interest in competitive swimming in Chicago sponsor Festival next week. On Tuesday commencing--' and finishing at North -avenue, there will be a one and one-half mile swimming race for men. The contestants will enter the water at" North avenue and swim south to a point opposite the Drake Hotel arid then back again to North. On Wednesday afternoon a three-quarter mile race for women will be held. The start will be at North and the finish opposite the Drake Hotel.

On Wednesday evening, there will be a three- quarter mile race for lifeguards. All lifeguards regularly cm- ployed on any of the beaches in the Chicago area are eligible. All three events are sanctioned by the Central A.A.U. and open only to registered amateurs. Entry blanks may be obtained at the Chicago Park District beaches and from the Special Events Department in the Mayor's Office in the City Hall.

Awards will be made to the first five swimmers in each event, and all swimmers who complete the course will receive a medallion. PRESSURE being exerted by the Chicago Park District during the past two years to change the format of the Cook County golf tourney at Columbus Park and curtail this ular golf event has many of the club's members boiling, we learn. This year the field in the tournament was limited to 120 with the result that some 150 entries were returned. We haven't been able to get specifics as to why the golf powers that be at the District are looking unkindly upon this well established event, but we do know that they are making no friends and influencing a lot of people the wrong way. Lexon Junior Ponies In 3-Game Series Lexon A.C.'s Junior Pony league tournament team will play best two out of three series next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday against either Woodburn, Ind; or McComb, O.

These two were battling this week for the right to meet the Lexon nine.
