Sun-Standard Newspapers, Sunday, April 13, 1975 Section II Page Jacobson regains Stroh 9 by a (chest) hair RRs ordered to settle with Rock By JOE GATRELL i year ago, on a cold ijnd grey Saturday evening, Rick Jacobson sat dejected- Iv in the Alsip apartment of His longtime friend Jack i In the eyes of the somewhat tall, blonde 20 year did, the world had ended. "the complete catastrophe had occurred. There was nothing more for which to live. i Rick Jacobson had just lost the first annual (1974) gtroh's Cup table hockey tournament best-of-seven championship series, 4-2, to 4n obviously superior Brad furmeister. i So, like so many little boys who have been scolded or punished, Jacobson had the appropriate reaction.

He rose from his chair and, head down, paced the floor. He pouted. His lower lip protruded. He cursed. And, like so many other athletes, he vowed revenge and "wait 'til next year." But unlike all those little boys, and unlike many of the jocks who forget their vows, Jacobson remembered his defeat.

And he did something about it. Thus over the last year Jacobson gained fame in two areas. The first, and most immediately noticeable, is his "chest." Since that upsetting loss to Burmeister, Jacobson adopted the drinking of Stroh's beer as a hobby. As a result Jacobson is know as "The Chest" now because his "chest" extends from his shoulder blades to an area below, and over, his belt buckle. Despite, his new acreage, of which he is proud, "The Chest" takes most pride in another endeavor.

That is, table hockey. Jacobson has loved and has played table hockey consistently since his disappointing defeat last April, building himself into the best player in Blue Island, and even competing in the U.S. Open table hockey championships held in Chicago last March. For "The Chest" the payoff came last weekend. He upended arch rival Burmeister twice in the double elimination 1975 Stroh's Cup table-hockey championship, the second time in the final series 4-2, to capture the Cup and prove undoubtedly that "The Chest" is the best.

Jacobson's mastery in the sport of table hockey must now be considered unquestioned. He defeated a talent laden field of Cup entries which include some of this city's best. Jack Lopez, George Lamore, Burmeister, Scott Baker, Mike and Dave Ernst were contenders, not pretenders, for the crown. Each of the forementioned is a capable player, and while Jacobson did not defeat each one, Burmeister and third place finisher Lamore did. The overwhelming evidence in this case is that no one but Champion Jacobson defeated Burmeister, while no one could win more than two games in a series with Jacobson, who was the only tournament player who remained undefeated in series play.

As a reward for his overwhelming victory, Jacobson received, for one year or until a new champion is crowned, the seven inch, silver Stroh's loving Cup, on which the champ's name is inscribed. "Of course wanted revenge," said Jacobson after his victory. "In the tournament, I played hardest.and best against Brad. I was fired up to play him like no one else. "And I can tell you why I won, too," continues the champ.

"The U.S. Open table hockey tournament helped me improve. Brad was no match for me because he just didn't have the moves and shots which the tournament players and I have." Jacobson's statement is as accurate a summation of the championship series as can be found. For while Burmeister was by far the quickest and possibly the most (potentially) talented player, he could not match nor compete with Jacobson's offensive and defensive repertoire. But lest anyone think that Jacobson is the only winner, -Rev.

and Mrs. Walter Grace, who were gracious enough to donate their home as the tournament site, some pleasant company in the form of players and fans, plenty of good music, and, of course, a seemingly unlimited supply of Stroh's, the Cup was a winner. And thanks to the fine brand of hockey which was played, many players who did not participate in this year's event have expressed interest in the '76 pup, which will, presumably, be held in Blue Island again. On Monday evening, 48 hours after he won the Stroh's Cup, Rick Jacobson walked into the Maplewood Inn. The Maplewood is "The Chest's" stomping ground.

It is there that he worked long hours to develop the now famous "chest." "Bottle of Stroh's?" asked the bartender Ray Masek as "The Chest" approached. "No, a said Jacobson patting his "chest." "I'm trying to lose my chest. No beer." He may lose his "chest," but will he ever lose the Stroh's Cup? U. S. District Court Judge Frank J.

McGarr has ordered all railroads to immediately settle their interline obligations with the Rock Island. Some railroads had faired to pay Rock Island's freight charges, car rents and other charges because they were offsetting such sums against amounts owed them by the Rock Island prior to the reorganization filing. "These delinquent accounts have already exceeded a million dollars," noted Rock Island Trustee William Gibbons. The Court says it all railroads to settle all terline obligations immediately, without any offsets, or answer to the Court Church (Disciples) for years; as associate pastor of East Pearl Street United Mehtodist Church, New Haven, for two years, during which time he was also involved in community planning and working with community sixth through 12th grade youth.
