8 2C THE GETTYSBURG TIMES, SATURDAY-SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29-30, 1986 at VI t' Ki ui Handy Andy By Jeffrey B. Roth Times Staff Writer Handy Andy was a locally produced homosexual child pornography publication It featured photographs of boys engaged in fellatio, masturbation, and other sexual acts State police at Gettysburg who investigated the incident said at least 20 local teenage boys had been involved in the kiddie porn ring that operated for two years before it was reported to authorities, by one of the victims A 58-year-old man accused of running the mail-order operation was said to entice boys into the operation by providing them drugs and alcohol The clandestine studio was housed at two different locations in the county, a two-and one-half story red brick house on the Farm Company Road, near Aspers, and in an efficiency apartment at a motel in Cumberland Township Police raided the latter rented home in May 1984, however the suspect had fled the scene Later returned to Adams County after being arrested in Will County Illinois, John David Norman, who is alleged to have at least 20 different aliases, was charged locally with a total of 20 child molestation and sexual abuse offenses including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse The charges stemmed from allegations made by one of three identified vie tims Police said Norman had a record of past child sexual assault offenses and is wanted in at least five other if you know of a case of abuse and fail to report it, you are as responsible for the crime as the offender. states on similar charges A jailhouse lawyer, Norman successfully filed a writ to have his bail reduced After posting $7,500 in cash he skipped bail He is still at large While a warrant for his arrest his still outstanding Norman apparently has a great deal of experience eluding capture and detection In Adams County, he is known to have said that he was a researcher and writer Without the tip. the pornography operation may have gone on indefinitely Child pornography in the United States is an over $50 million a year business There are over 300 known pedophile publications in the country And the list is growing But child pornographers account for only a small portion of the total number of sexual molestation cases that occur each day It is estimated that one in every five girls will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18 Even infants, under one-year-old are sexually abused About one boy in every 10 will also be molested The molestors are not strangers in the majority of cases Most often the abusers are the parents, siblings, grandparents or other members of the family If not a family member, odds are the abuser is someone trusted by the child, such as a coach, teacher, or other adult who works with children Locally, there were only eight reports of sexual abuse in 1977 Since August of this year, there have been 44 reports and 20 confirmations of the sexual abuse of children Reports have increased Whether actual incidents of sexual abuse have increased is debatable For many years, incest, and sexual abuse of children were considered a family matter A secret, as the perpetrator tells the victim On December 10 and 11 the Adams County Council on Child Sexual Abuse will hold a regional conference on the topic Featuring Dr Suzanne Sgroi, author of A Handbook of Clinical Intervention in Child Sexual Abuse Judge Oscar Spicer and District Attorney Gary Hartman. the conference will focus on the dynamics of sexual abuse investigation, valida tion, victim treatment, offender treat ment.

and the law Remember, it is a crime, not just a family problem Innocent children are being violated, used, and abused in Adams County If you know of a case of abuse and fail to report it, you are as responsible for the crime as the offender The bubble By Zachary Taylor Times Staff Writer The other night, I was talking to Frank Williams, dean of educational services at Gettysburg College We spoke about how much I enjoyed my job at the paper, and how we were both missing a lecture that night to attend the Adams County SPCA meeting In the midst of the conversation I said, "It is truly amazing how I lived in Gettysburg for four years and remained completely oblivious to the community around me It ironic that I'm now neck deep in the doings in Adams County after never paying any attention to Gettysburg at all He looked at me squinted his eyes, puffed on his pipe, and said. 'Well, I suppose some students do go through their four years like that, never paying any attention to Gettysburg as a town I beg to differ with the dean From my vantage point it seems that nearly all the students feel this way If the entire town disappeared, save for 7-11, McDonald Robbie Pizza and Big Jim's Beverage the college students wouldn't care at all The separation which has developed between the college students and the residents of Gettysburg has been going on for God knows how long, and why I don't know Perhaps it is the age of the students They are all between 18 ana 22. and most have yearned to be on their own" for several years previously the Gettysburg community is far more accurate cross-section of American life than a one-class New York suburb located in northeast Jersey. College is the perfect medium for semi-responsibility Go to classes, study for a few hours daily and it playtime Since the drinking age is 21 and the student is not allowed to drink at bars the fraternity house basement is the social nucleus of their universe Dining and bedding are also provided the fraternity is a self contained unit In it, the student can create a bubble around his tiny universe and have no use for Gettysburg or any town What tnis breeds of course, is mutual contempt betw een the students and residents One former Times said that she wouldn't be caught dead with 'those Ivy league yuppies. students bring up things like incest rates and mixed marriages in their slander Neither point of view is fair to the other What I have learned in my six months since graduation is that the Gettysburg community is far more accurate cross section of American life than a one-class New York suburb located in northeast Jersey Why don't the students take advantage of it 7 I feel that that the college could be an asset to the community in more than an economic manner It could provide more cultural avenues for the residents to pursue (thank you, Dr Schmidt for the Summer Theatre I and sponsor more college-town activi ties in an attempt to bridge the intellectual gap between the two inevitably mutualistic communities The college could not survive with out Gettysburg, and in turn, the Gettysburg has grown dependent on college revenues Gettysburg College was founded in 1832 Has this across the tracks" nonsense gone on for 154 years' How when and why it started is beyond me I think that, in part, as soon as a student grows up enough to realize that there is a community out there which they can benefit from and contribute to.

they leave and a new batch of snotty freshmen come in to start the cycle over again It is up to the students to make the first mov e. to let their bubbles burst It would better prepare them for the lives which await them after graduation Who does care?
