98 90 68 90 222 166 99 92 69 90 222 Liquidation Causes a Big Slump and Prices Sag. i 1 The necessity of liquidation to settle called loans forced a decline In values on the stock market last week that on Friday threatened to develop Into a panic. After forcing matters to the danger pctnt the capitalists and bankers who engineered the decline canie to the rescue with large buying orders which in a measure checked, the downward movement and temporarily at least, restored confluence. That the great contraction of loans aud dealings was accomplished without serious results 'Is -a matter of great satisfaction. The declines in active railroad stocks has ranged from 10 to 20 points during the recent bear raid, and to even greater depreciation In the quoted values of industrial stocks.

Much satisfaction has been expressed at the failure of the sagging market to affect the activity of industrial and commercial enterprises. The spirit of conservatism that has seized Wall Street speculators has not spread to the legitimate business interests of the country. It was a foregone conclusion that there must be a check to the sharp declines in stock market values, but the check came sooner than was anticipated. The artificial prices manufactured by the Western co-A terle of speculators has been smashed by the conservatism of Eastern capitalists, who refused longer to back the phantom J- boom, and a new level of values is the result. The Western crowd is now said to be on the bear side of the speculative market, and further hammering of their A specialties is generally expected.

The speculative temper of the community has been shorn of its buoyancy, and dealings tl at the present time are very largely among the professional who A turn the market to their credit In whlch-t ever direction It Is headed. The only cer-'j talnty of the market at the present time seems to be that there la no possibility of a successful bull movement until 'If money market conditions are more fav-. orable than at the present. Sharp declines under heavy liquidation was the feature of last weeks cotton market.

Since the bullish September report on the crop the staple has declined nearly or quite a cent a pound, and futures have suffered to a like extent. Brokers supposed to represent (he chief Wall Street interests have been heavy sellers for January and March deliveries. Weakness In the foreign market and heavy port receipts have been the leading features of the decline. The sharp break In the stock market on Friday also had a material effect. Shorts were the best buyers during the decline.

The tendency of crop reports was toward higher estimates for the season's yield. The table below shows the highest and lowest prices of the active options for the week and yesterday's closing BANKING AND FINANCIAL. John L. Rlker, Wm, Ruhaii, Jr. John W.

Two Irishmen were in New York City bound for the West. They had several railroad time-tables and were looking them over for the purpose of selecting a route thither. They finally discovered that some lines had more tracks than others and they concluded, very innocently, to take the one tthkh had the greatest number of tracks. Hence they took the four-tracked New York Central. Hut their decision was based not upon the fact, but Jhe fancy, in the premises.

Said Mulligan to Pat: Pnt, we'll be afther takin the four-tracker; for If she leps one track she lands on won tv the ethers fin' loses no time; but if ItS a one or two-tracker heft to slow up and put on the brakes an lift back on an wed be a day late. the nation is being used to support union men that engage in this kind of persecution. Surely the most pressing duty of the hour is to arrest the prevalent spirit among politicians to knuckle down to labor unions, and to see that non-union labor Is relieved from its servitude and put Into possession of equal rights with union labor. LARGEST RUG IN AMERICA. IS 59.8 BY 37.8 AND WEIGHS 2,750 POUNDS MADE IN BERLIN FOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. One of the features of the new building of the New York Chamber of Commerce that has attracted great attention is the enormous rug upon the marble floor of the large assembly room.

This rug. which was designed and furnished by W. J. Sloane, Is a hand-tufted Berlin, 59 feet 8 by 37 feet 8, and weighs 2.750 pounds. The rug is the largest and handsomest carpet woven in one piece ever brought to this country, and is so heavy that it took fifty men to carry it into the Chamber of Commerce building.

-It was hand woven in Germany, and its enoromus size precluded its being shipped in the hold of the steamship which brought It to this country, and it was, therefore, placed on the deck, packed in a specially made zinc-lined case. The total weight of the package was more than three tons. When the work of weaving this rug was progressing It was necessary to strengthen the looms several times, as the heavy looms nearly broke under the weight and tension of the rug, but the main difficulty arose when the workmen had to take the rug from the loom to finish and shear It, and It was finally necessary to take a portion of the outside wall of the building away in order to remove the rug, as the other openings proved too narrow. A noteworthy feature of this rug Is its great depth of pile and beautiful even texture. New York Times.
