Overmyer. who flew on two space shuttle missions, including a Spacelab flight, has become the second astronaut to announce retirement plans since the Challenger explosion. NASA officials said. The 49-year-old Marine Corps colonel will retire June 1. John Lawrence, spokesman for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's astronaut office, said Monday.

Lawrence said Overmyer had not said why he is retiring. Don L. Lind announced in mid- March that he was retiring as of June. Alvin Childress INGLEWOOD. Calif.

(API -Actor Alvin Childress. who held a title role in "Amos Andy" and defended the television comedy from charges it stereotyped blacks, has died at the age of 78. Childress died at St. Erne Sanitarium "Saturday after a long illness, said Lauren Terrault. a spokeswoman for the facility.

Childress. who played taxi driver- narrator Amos Jones on the popular but controversial CBS-TV program in the early 1950s, also appeared on such later series as "The Jeffersons" and "Sanford and Son." Civil rights groups protested "Amos Andy" for fostering demeaning racial stereotypes, but Childress once said: "I didn't feel it harmed the Negro at all Actually the series had many episodes that showed the Negro with professions and businesses like attorneys, store owners, and so on, which they never had in TV or movies He also said in a 1975 interview that he enjoyed acting, "but it's a mess, and I've never recommended it to anyone." Childress played a projectionist in the 1975 film "The Day of the Locust." and appeared in the 1976 movie "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings" and "The Main Event" in 1979. Childress graduated from high school in Meridian. and attended Rust College. Coming to New York in 1931.

he first appeared on Broadway in "Savage Rhythm." He later joined the Federal Theater when it was formed and worked as an instructor with the American Negro Theater. Childress, who earned a bachelor's degree in sociology, worked as a social worker for Los Angeles County after "Amos Andy" was canceled by CBS "Amos Andy" began on television in 1953 after a long run as a popular radio programs.
