Loganiport. Ind, Sunday. October*. 1*77 State Apparently Averted Outbreak Of Encephalitis INDIANAPOLIS (UPIl Indiana apparently averted an encephalitis outbreak this summer, bui health officials naven'l determined if there will oe a downward trend in measle case* this winter and next spring. "We may have been lucky wis year on encephalitis," said Dr. Charles Barrett, director of the State Board of Health's Communicable Diseases Division, Only one case of "sleeping sickness" has been reported in the state this year and the encephalitis season is nearly over. Two years ago 32! cases of the St. Louis strain of the disease were confirmed, including 17 deaths. Last year there were 20 confirmed cases, Including one fatality. Barrett said Hoosiers may have been "lucky" because an upswing in the disease in birds was noted late in the season. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes to both humans and birds. Health officials have been testing birds for the disease, hoping this would act as an indicator for the possibility of encephalitis in humans. . Toward the end of the testing period in September, "sleeping sickness" was found in up to five per cent of the birds checked, but no similar trend has developed in humans. The one confirmed human case of encephalitis involved a Vincennes area resident who survived the disease. Although health officials arc done checking birds for !he year, they will continue researching the disease. "For one thing, we want to find out what happens to Ihc virus in the winter" when mosquitoes are not around, he said. It's too soon to delerminc if a measles upswing will continue this winter and next spring. Barrett said. For years the number of measles cases in Indiana was counted in the hundreds, but the usually childhood disease broke into the thousands last year. So far this year 4,329 cases have been reported to the health board — most of them before the summer when the disease ebbs. High levels of immunization are necessarv to curb the spread of measles. Barrett said. "It's been known to spread even in groups with up to 90 per cent immunizalion," he said. • State law requires school children to be vaccinated against measles, bu! records of compliance .are still 'being compiled by school officials and haven't been tabulated by the health board. Barrett said.' The problem boils down basically to two things: not enough children have been immunized and some who did receive vaccine in the 1960s were given ineffective serum.
