Two new songs, "Echo," a love song, and "Color TV Blues," a rather out of step protest song, didn't really strike us, but we'll have to wait for his forthcoming album before making any hasty evaluations of his direction Unless you happen to find Ringo Starr's nasal voice charming, or his past associations too Important to ignore, "Ringo's Rotogravu. is nothing more than just a pleasant record.

"The last lour we did wilh the Beach Boys," recalled lead guitarist Terry Kath backstage, "we just played a set of our tunes. No jamming. It was a good overall show, but I began to feel like a juke box." Walter Parazaider, who handles Ihe saxophones and flute In Chicago's well orchestrated horn section, says thai it's (he "room" they get individually that keeps them together as a group.

So every Ip has Its hard and soft, a few different bags. We've always worked towards making the group a vehicle for everyone in il lo do what they want." That explains the reason why all their albums are numbered, not named. They previewed one selection from Ihe upcoming "Chicago XI" album, an unusually hard, lunky, and tuneless number called "Uptown," featuring lead guitarist Terry Kath. Rolling Slone Magazine has put together an interesting selection of essays and an absolutely wild batch of photographs for their "History of Dock and Roll" book, and Ihe package is a treat for rock fans and a great gift idea. Our only objection with the book, and perhaps this is a larger objection to much of what's called the rock press, is that some of the essays included therein read like term papers, and not very good ones at that. It's one thing to be scholarly and thorough, it's another to be boring.

Rock and roll is about good limes and its genesis was EAST DESTIN, FLA. 837 8722 By Stan Mieses Alter 10 years and 21 million albums, the rock octet known as Chicago has become a stronghold for pop music. The band's strength lies In its patchwork musical output, which 13 colored by equal parls of the various personalities in the group. Thus, they really can play something for everybody. The question Ihey raise in concert is: how much is specifically for you? We caught them in the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland recently, and for us, Ihey Just manage to fill Ihe bill.

Chicago is best when they play tight, and they could certainly satisfy any audience wim an evening of just their shorter tracks. It's hard to believe that "If You Leave Me Now," perhaps their least distinctive single, is their first national number one hit. Rarely has a group with as much diversity as Chicago come up with great singles like "25 or 6 lo 4," "You Are My Inspiration," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is," and fans can pick out yet other favorites. But, there's a slreak of ar tiness that's occasionally unbecoming to a brassy outfit like Chicago. The movie's plot depicts a massacre of the inhabitants of a liny French village by Nazi troops as World War neared ils end. An irate German student living in Chile protested lo a local newspaper that (he plot was unfounded and portrayed German soldiers as "criminal fascists." He claimed also that the movie could reflect in a negative wayon the Chilean armed forces because they were organized by Prussian officers decades ago. By Dick Kleiner HOLLYWOOD (NEM Dan O'Herlihy has snagged one of (he most interesting parts of the year. In the upcoming movie, "MacArthur," he's playing Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"Good parts like this," says (he Irish actor, "come along maybe once in ten years." He says he had never thought of himself as an F.D.Il. took alike. But, with a false chin and jowls, pince nez and cigaret holder, he does loofc like the late president. "i am not trying to imitate him," O'Herlihy says. "I'm an actor, not a mimic.

Mimics duplicate the person's voice, but don't get to the heart of the man. You need an actor for lhat." He did try to get some of F.D.R.'s rhythms or speech and habits of behavior. To do that, he watched hours of film of Roosevelt. He says Universal, which is making "MacArthur," with Gregory Peck in the title role, auditioned many R. doubles.

But he says they eventually decided to go with an actor in the part, rather than just trying to dupliuate the look of the man. O'Herlihy is a veteran actor, but he says he still considers acting his hobby. He was trained as an architect and acted on the side, until he realized his hobby was becoming more lucrative than his profession. "I feel fortunate," he says, "that I've been able to indulge my hobby so long. I've really never worked I've just indulged by hobby." I have to read many books on or by show business people, and most of them are self serving (only natural) and often boring (unnatural).

DEAR DICK: Reeenlly Jerry Lewis and family appeared on one of Oral Roberts' telecasts, concluded Trom this program and from his many other commendable deeds, charities, that Jerry has strong religious principles. Can you tell me in what church or synagogue Mr. Lewis and lamlly are active? B.M.

HAMPTON, Springfield, Mo. You are right about Jerry's strong religious principles. But he is not a regular attendant at any synagogue. The rest or his family is Roman Catholic and regularly attends services al St. Paul the Apostle Church, in West Los Angeles.

DEAR DICK: I understand that a few years ago Cesar Romero hod a picture taken dancing with Carmen Miranda.
