The relapse in rubber prices caused a continued decline in earnings throughout 1928. The balance before deducting the Manhattan Railway rental was $877,001. Eleven Month Period. For the eleven months ended May 31, gross revenue was 104,000,736, an increase of over that of the corresponding period of 1928.

Ex- penses were $38891,801, an increase of $2,760,902. The increase in expenses wns offset, however, by a decrease of $788,035 in taxes vdiicU amounted to $2,201,008. The increase in expenses was caused largely by the Times Square subway accident and legal ex- penses incident the seven-cent fare suit. Rentals wre $74,807 larger than for the corresponding period of the previous rear, while interest charges were $40,713 less. Net in come before a'lowance for Manhattan Railway rentals was $5,607,241, an increase of A decrease of $14,643 in the net in- come for May, 1029, was reported yesterday by the Third Avenue Rail way System.

Net income after expenses, interest and other charges was $31,551, against $46,194 for May, 192S. Operating revenue was $1,340,615, an increase of $28,674 over that for May, 1928, which amounted to $1,320,941. Operating expenses amounted to against $1,021,687 for May. 1028. For the eleven months ended May 31.

It was not revealed yesterday whetler this sum would be adequate to cover the cost of obtaining and developing the property, or whether an additional appropriation would be sought. In addition to making his request for borough playgrounds, Commissioner Browne also presented to tho Control-ler apetition for the purchase of new iites for future development as public parks. As the first move in this direction, he asked that at least one site bs obtained for this purpose from the $3,000,000 now available. The conference, at whichMhe results ef the.Fnrlt Commisioner's work were made known, was held at the request of the Controller. After giving considerable study to the mnter and further eliminating prospective playground Borough President Byrne, the Controller and Commissioner Browne greed finally on the twelve areas in which playgrounds are needed most.

At the meeting of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment tomorrow afternoon, Controller Berry will tenort officially on the park and playground situation. In his Mnv report to the Estimate Board, the Controller made a plea for increased appropriations for park purposes. Tomorrow will be his first opportunity to show what use he is making ot the $3,000,000 allowed him.

In addition to the prospective acquisitions of parks and playgrounds in Brooklyn, the Controller has been discussing similar plans with the four other borough presidents. The meeting of the Board of Estimate tomorrow will be its last before summer recess.
