PLAYGROUND DAILY NEWS, Wednesday Morning, October PLAYGROUND DAILY NEWS, Wednesday Morning, October Can Vikings Overcome Aggie Obstacle? A TIME ihere wis this of Vikings who tflought they were the meanest, rouahest anri QtTM I included a 43-0 win over Escambia, a 40-0 iriumnh over minis ihk a Ulere WIS this Vikings, who the meanest, roughest and strongest outfit in their lerntorial bpundries. And they had good reason to believe ar bef re won more of their anj the me W8rriors still within their to buM and mo)d the a had very good reason to think they would roll out and conquer any opposing force. To show their strength this band of Vikings decided to invade thelandoftheLionintheirinitialbattlc And why not? It was these Lions which in the previous year dommated not only the Northwest territory, but also the entire land which draped east and south. So, with the utmost confidence these Vikings donned their battle gear and made what they hoped might be a suprise attack on the Lions LJtn. It was no surprise.

The Lions were ready. And when the battle was over UieJVikings found themselves retreating to their home land, scratched and scarred by the claws of the hungry Lions With their pride stung by defeat, the Vikings returned home to mend their wounds and regroup their forces Around the Viking village'there was talk talk that maybe just maybe, the Vikings were not what they had appeared to be! But this particular band of Vikings was a'stubborn bunch. They refused and mourn their defeat. With determination and pride they rebuilt their attack and in doing so made for what it's worth ron baiicki sports editor it much stronger, They then went on a rampage, all but demolishing every foe which got into (heir way. So impressive were these Vikings in the six weeks which followed their initial defeat, that they once again became known and feared throughout the territory.

This leads us to the present and although this may sound like a fairy tale, it is in fact, a reality. And, it is no secret that these Vikings are those assembled at Fort Walton Beach High School under the expert guidance of Chester Norris and that their battleground is a football field. Since that opening game 28-0 loss to Tallahassee Leon's Lions, who won the slate 4A grid championship last year, the Vikes have comeback and crushed five straight opponents. Included in those victories was a string of 19 consecutive scoreless quarters, broken only last Friday when Panama City Rutherford scored on a long pass play on the fourth period. FWB has oulscored its opponents 169-6 in that five game span which included a 43-0 win over Escambia, a 40-0 triumph over Woodham, a 28-0 victory over Mosley, a 30-0 decision over Washington and a 28-6 win over Rutherford.

The siring enabled the Vikings to climb out of the obscurity which followed (he Leon game to a No. 19 ranking in the Dunkel State Ratings, which last week honored Norris as one if its Coaches of the Week. Since lhatopening defeat the Vikes offensive attack has been so overpowering that each battle's eventual outcome could be determined long before the finish, In their five straight victories the combination of the Viking offense and defense has dominated the opposition to the tune of' first downs, 94-29; rushing yeards, passing yards 408 on 28 of 61-140 on 14 of 54. And to add a bit more flavor to the sweet tasting statistics, the Vike defense has also forced their opponents into 17 turnovers. But while the stats and the string of shutout quarters are most impressive they could turn into meaningless numbers after this Friday night That's when the Vikings meet their most serious NFL STANDINGS UflllHl Prtii Intirnition.l Americin Conference i L.

Pel. PF Cincinnati Plllsurgh HDUlfon Theoppositionwillbelhatof thePensacola Tale Aggies a team which is undefeated in six outing this year, including' a 37-21 victory over Leon. Like FWB, Tale boasts a potent offensive attack, one which is led by standout quarterback Scotli Madison and has produced 175 points this season, Defensively the Vikings, by way of their shutout string, have Ihe edge on the Aggies, allowing only 36 points this season compared lo Tale's 96. However, against common opponents (Leon Mosley and Washington) FWB owns a 2-1 record and has scored 58 points while allowing 28 and Tale is 3-0 with 88 pomis for and 48 against. In district play the Vikes own a 3-0 record while the Aggies are 1-0.

While FWB will have one more district game after Friday Tale will still have three. Bui il is doubtful either will lose in those outings, making the matchup on Halloween night one which should attract more attention than witches, goblins and ghosts of the eerie night. Il will also be homecoming nighl for FWBHS Friday and combine this with the imporlanceof the game and it should add up lo a standing room only crowd, surpassed only by thai of a FWB- Choctaw game. The Aggies are expected to bring a large following to Memorial Stadium and if you plan to do your "Trick or Treating" and then go to Ihe game, you may find yourself watching the action near or around the end zone area. As for the Halloween flare the Tricks could come on the football field as each team is expected to dig deep into its bag and come out with whatever new wrinkle it can.

And the only better Treat than the festivities of homecoming will be (barring any unforseen miracle upset) awarded the winner in the form of adistrict litle Now that's a Trick or Treat worth seeing.
