Houston (AP) The Apollo 16 astronauts are taking two fancy compasses to the Descartes highlands today to help scientists. explain perplexing enigmas about the moon's weak magnetic field.

Since the discovery, by Apollo 12 instruments of the moon's magnetic field times weaker than earth's--scientists pondering lunar evolution theories often have wished the lunar magnetism could just be explained away. "It would be much simpler to explain most of the things we understand about the moon if we could somehow dispose of this magnetic field," said Dr. Paul W. Gast. chief scientist at the Manned Spacecraft Center.

"Unfortunately. my colI think. won't allow that." So John. W. Young and Charles M.

Duke Jr. are to erect a magnetometer, an instrument to measure magnetic fields, as part of the nuclear-powered science station. During their excursions with the lunar rover car they'll carry a portable magnetometer to make other measurements. RD 1. Gary Raymer, Shelocta Discharged Larry A.

Brandon, Indiana RD Elizabeth J. Ricci, Homer City RD 2. They'll also take a funar rock returned by Apollo 12 in 1969 back to the moon's surface, Scientists want to know If a "soft" type magnetism found in many lunar rocks in laboratories is due to magnetic effects on earth or had a funar origin. The stronger magnetism found moon rocks is belleved to have been given the rocks about four billion years ago as they cooled. from a molten state and passed through some strong magnetic field.

1 The process is similar to rubbing a pin on a magnet and transferring which 'then magnetism to the pin, will pick up iron filings. What baffles the experts is where the strong moon magnetism came from back when earth and it's satellite were weathering the convulsions -creation.
