''He was always joking and putting people into a good humor. In his political speeches, he didn't talk about the great work he expected to do: he told stories and related experiences to provide entertainmen for the audience. I don't need to add that there were no vacan seats when it was known tha' Tom Byrne was to be a speaker.

"Ribbing his attorney friends was one of his great Buehler recalled. "I was the but of his good-natured raillery mos often, because we were closely associated for many years. One his favorite stories was about a law suit he once filed. 'I wish I had studied Tom would drawl in his inimitable Irish brogue. 'The last law suit I had, I hired not one lawyer, but two.

When it got around to Tom, he turned that hitherto dignified session into a picnic. Tom had a little incident to relate about each of the members, old and new. He panicked them," Buehler concluded.

Born on August 15. 1875, in County Mayo. Ireland, the son of Anthony and Mary Kennedy Byrne, Thomas Byrne came to America in 1895 with his parents. a brother, Michael, and four sisters. The Byrne family settled in Parsons, where Tom got his first job at the age of 15 as a breaker boy and mule-skinner in the Pennsylvania coal mines.

"This," he often told friends, "was my introduction to politics-when the three-mule team I drove split up into factions." Around the turn of the century the Byrne family came to Chicago. Thomas went to work as a "tow boy'' at the South Side street car barns. His brother, Michael, went into the plumbing business and is now a contractor at 1640 W. 69tn st. Thomas later became financial secretary and business agent of the Street Car Men's union.

About 1912 he left the street cat- company to go into business with his brother. His First Public Office. In 1914 he entered politics, running for the State senate from the Englewood district and was defeated by only a few hundred votes. His first public office came two years later, in 1916, when he was elected alderman of the old 29th ward, now the 15th, an office which he held for 14 years, serving seven consecutive terms. In 1930 Mr.

Byrne was elected a trustee of the Sanitary District board. He was re-elected and then was chosen trustee again last year and was serving his third term at the time of his death. During his career as alderman, Mr. Byrne was active on a number of council committees. As a leading council member, he was instrumental in reshaping the police pension system, introduced the smoke-abatement ordinance and promoted a measure to provide showers from i hydrants for children in hot weather.

As an active member of St. Rita jer of the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Byrne played a prominent jart in the alt'airs of his parish, as well as in Catholic circles Ihroughout Chicago. He was a of the Holy Name society. Surviving are his widow, Catherine Susan, and three sons, Corp.
