Pocketbooks have a lot to do with feminine emancipation. Certainly there was not much need for them several centuries back when women were not entrusted with property-such as money. Today, now that women know practically as much about pecuniary matters as their husbands and sweethearts, often the purse strings are entrusted wholly to feminine hands. During the middle ages, the almoner was the first outward symbol of woman's authority in the home. This was a bag of various shapes and materials that contained principally the keys to the household and no money, at first.

It was worn fastened to the belt on the outside. Later, when wealth grew out of proportion to law r.nd order, women began to wear their skirts. This was the first pocket. Itcontalhea a little money, perhaps, a mirror, sometimes a carving knife, and almost certainly a rabbit's foot or some other powerful charm. The next development was to sew the pocket into the skirt and in 1850 when the hoopskirt began so show in its early forms, the sewed -In pocket became a customary part of a lady's dress.

The French revolution provided the immediate ancestor for our present day handbag and its inspiration was the sabretache of the French cavalry. These bags were of rich and beautiful material, slung from the shoulders by long ribbon or silk rope. There was a time, not so many years ago, when handbags were rather bulky affairs, with no importance in fashion and one handbag might serve feminine needs until it grew shabby and old. But modern bags are too attractive and too fashionable to serve such a life. "Proof of the pudding?" See the newest favorites of the French designers! Two opinions affecting land in the control of the siate land department which were expected to be an effective lever in preventing grabbing up of the good lands of the state to the exclusion of the bad, were handed down by the attorney general Monday. One of the Opinions, both of which were written for I. H. Nash, commissioner laaoX declared thai a purchaser of state land could not later select portions of his purchase, complete payment for these and then refuse to complete payment on other sections of the land. Sale of Land Brings l'p Question.

The question arose when a purchaser of a forty-acre tract sold ten acres of the piece which had been separated from the main tract by a drainage ditch. The purchaser of the smaller tract asked to complete purchase of his land Immediately, white the original holder did not wish to do so on the balance of the tract. Attorney General Frank I. Stephan said that to allow this would establish a precedent is favor of allowing a purchaser to take his pick from a tract of tend on which he had taken an option, and, subsequently, rejected the unwanted balance. Other Opinion Affects Mineral Land.

The other opinion declared it illegal for a person to file on igore than the legal limit of 640 acres of mineral land, even though he had sublet a part of his original lease. To allow such a procedure would give one person an opportunity to get control of large portions of the state's mineral lands merely through a system of subleases, the opinion held. Germany's Chief Distributes Gifts Paul Von Hindenburg, 81, Gives Presents to Family. BERLIN, Dec, 24 Paul von Hindenburg, the 81-year-old president of the German republic, spent Christmas eve quietly at his home in the executive mansion. He was surrounded by children and grandchildren and a blazing Christmas tree was the center of a pile of presents.

The octogenarian personally distributed the gifts to the younger members of the family. The home celebration was preceded by official festivities in the reception hall of the mansion, where the entire presidential staff, domestics and other employees of the presidential entourage assembled and heard General von Hlnderburg wish them each a merry Christmas. Here, too, there were gifts for all. and. after distribution of them, the chief of the government presided at an informal repast of coffee and Christmas cake.

More than a thousand destitute and aged persons were gladdened by about 100 marks each. This money was distributed from the remnant of the Hlnderburg fund, founded on the occasion of the president eightieth birthday. Santa Claus Goes Over Path Cut by Hurricane (Copyright. 1828, Standard Pub. Co.

Federal officers, having cleaned up many sources of supply in Mackay and Salmon counties, have been busy in the city the past week checking up on dispensers of Christmas cheer, and Monday morning, assisted by deputy sheriffs and following several hours' intensive search, found a hidden still room in a local residence and confiscated five barrels of mash and about three gallons of the finished product. The cache was found at 1555 North Main street and H. Girard and J.

W. Jones, who have been occupying the place, were placed under arrest and are now being held in the county Jail pending disposition of the case. According to officers, they have suspected that a still was hidden in the house for some time and searched the premises when It had another occupant without success. Monday, however, armed with positive information that a still was being operated there, they spent some two hours in the house as well as outside, measuring up the building in an attempt to find an opening in the cache. As a last resort one of the officers pulled out the drawers in a kitchen cupboard and found behind one a hole Just large enough for a man to squeeze through.

Investigation showed a space between the walls which led into the basement, where the still room was located. The room was walled In cement, and in no other way connected with the basement. Fumes of the liquor operations were carried through a pipe into the main chimney, they state. Officers found it necessary to cut when they left to make their Journey down the Colorado.
