lo Annville, Lebanon Daily News, Nov. 19, 1955 Sports Stars Shone Brightly InAnnville Sports have long been as- with community life in general in A i 11 through the accomplishments of some of the town's high school athletic teams as well as Lebanon Valley College teams, and in years back the' Annville town baseball teams. Individual athletes too have written sports history that reflected creditably to the Annville sector through their various fields of sport. In baseball, for instance, the names of the such stars of yesteryear as the Miller brothers, Eddie and the Shenk brothers, Al, Jake and Sim; and Polly Spcraw, to name some of the oldtimsrs, commanded" attention, and respect throughout this entire region because of their outstanding ability in the diamond sport. Topflight Player Eddie Miller went on to advance in the game professionally, and in addition to winning acclaim as an outstanding topflight minor leaguer, experienced three different flings in J.he majors.

He played first base the St. Louis Browns on two different occasions, and also spent some time with the Cleve- i land Indians in another season. In later years, Ussie's son Jim- rnie Miller attained some prominence as a minor league infielder, and more recently Dick Umberger began a pro career that showec promise as a southpaw pitcher, tut quit that career while it was still blossoming. An outstanding performer on at least one of those teams was Art Behney, one of the highest scoring performers in the history of the county circuit. Annville's American Legion Post has long sponsored teams in Legion Junior baseball, and has been actively interested in the game since Legion baseball was started in this county more than a quarter of a century ago. In fact, Annville teams won county championships in 1934-35 and 1940.

As the home of Lebanon Valley College, the town of Annville, has become known to the national collegiate sports world through the accomplishments of the LVC basketball teams these past several years. And since the completion of the school's own gym on the college campus basketball has been played to packed houses these several years. Athletic Family At least three of the Kreider brothers, sons of the late Congressman A. S. Kreider, brought recognition to their home town through participation in college sports.

The five Long brothers, Herman, Morris, Ike, Henry and Paul, wrote an unusual story in Penn State University sports history as all of them represented the Nittany Lions on the mat as the top grapplers in their respective divisions. Morris, one of the two known as "Shorty" brought one intercollegiate championship to Pcnn State in the 135-pound class, and the Long family saga is an outstanding chapter in Penn annals.
