That says a lot about Lembo, his program, where been and might be going. Lembo enters his fourth season in Muncie, Ind. After Brady Hoke drove the Cardinals to 12-2 in 2008 and then left for San Diego State, BSU was just 6-18 in two years under Stan Parrish. In 2011, Lembo pushed BSU to a two-game improve- ment and then ran off a 9-4 season in 2012. Last season, the Cardinals won 10 games for just the second time in three decades and finished sec- ond to Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference West.

Now, Ball State is building new facilities. And in March, it gave Lembo a contract exten- sion (five-year deal), named him associate athletics director and raised his salary $79,000 to $475,000, among the highest in the MAC. Of course, with a coach delivered, there was offseason flir- tation. Connecticut ap- proached him about its coaching vacancy, but the position went to Bob Diaco, the Notre Dame defensive coordinator. Lembo was the first in- terview at Wake Forest, but the job went to Bowl- ing Dave Claw- son.

Purdue and Boston College also showed interest. The Wake Forest deci- sion stung Lembo, who considers North Carolina home. it disappointing when a potential oppor- tunity that might change your life presents itself and you think you have a chance and it Lembo told the Burlington, N.C., Times- News. sure, all human. that veer you off course from what your mission is, to make Ball State as good as you can make it and to invest everything you have into that.

Horac- tio Banks (134 yards) and Jahwan Edwards (109) gave BSU its 20th game with two backs rushing for more than 100 yards. The Cardinals defense, the question mark head- ing into the season with linebacker Jonathan Newsome now in the NFL, held Colgate to 227 total yards. The Cardi- nals also held Colgate to 2-of-13 on third down and produced five 3-and-outs.

So whenWisconsin took a 17-point lead against LSU, the Badgers held the narrative of Big Ten futility just inches from an image shredder. Then Wisconsin get out of its own way, surrendered 21 consecu- tive points and extended the perpetual saga in a 28-24 loss in Houston, Texas.

A defense ravaged by injury succumbed to a late barrage from the Tigers. But problems mostly came down to an inept passing game and questionable coaching decisions. New starter Tanner McEvoy, who played safety last year, com- pleted just 8 of 24 passes for 50 yards. He was 3 of 11 for 17 yards and two interceptions in the second half. His quar- terback rating was 34.16, the worst by a Badgers starter since 1977, ac- cording to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Wiscon- sin even had last starter Joel Stave, whose .684 winning percentage ranks seventh in team history, on the bench. Stave won nine games last year and ranks fourth in team history in team completion percent- age (61.1). McEvoy consistently threw off his back foot and looked out of rhythm with his receivers. The Badgers could have survived the limping passing attack had their traditional running game maintained its excel- lence. But after Melvin Gordon burst through the LSU defense for a 63-yard run on the third first play which led to a Corey Clement touchdown run flopped.

The Badgers rushed just nine times for 20 yards the rest of the game. Gordon inexplicably ran just three times after his 63-yard run. know Wisconsin Coach Gary Andersen said when asked why Gordon bare- ly played in the second half. was good, Gordon said, via the Mil- waukee Journal Senti- nel. was all MICHIGAN MOVES UP The Big downfall in national perception began with Appalachian upset of then-No.

5 Michigan, 34-32, in the 2007 season opener. Sat- urday, Michigan had its opportunity to atone for the PR disaster and did so with authority. Hosting Appalachian State for the first time since that infamous meeting, the Wolverines built a 42-0 lead early in the third quarter and rolled to a 52-14 win at the Big House. Quar- terback Devin Gardner completed 13 of 14 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns. NEBRASKA HARVEST In a 55-7 win against Florida Atlantic, Ne- braska obliterated the modern-day Big Ten record for most yards in a game with 784, trail- ing only the 832 put up by Minnesota against Northwestern in 1905.

Ameer Abdullah rushed for 232 yards in barely a half, and quar- terback Tommie Arm- strong Jr. passed for 271 yards and two scores. understudy, Terrell Newby, rushed for 107 yards. Armstrong Jr. also ran for 62 yards and a touchdown.
