K. Lock wood Company's Circular. New Yonk, April 5. As generally expected the Panama Railroad Company has passed i(s current quarterly dividend, giving as a reason therefor that the Pacific Mail Company owes them an amountex ceeding which thus far every effort has failed to collect," and this has left them without sufficient funds in hand with which to nay the dividend. The stock market to day has been just the reverse of yesterday, opening weak, and so continuing to the close, being led by Central Railroad of New Jersey and Pacific Mail.

The tight between the latter company aud (he Panama Railroad Company goes bra veil on. The effect of their last note to the Pacific people has been that the company refuses to take any reight and that the steamer due here on Slonday will be laid up. 1 bey ore dismissing cmiUoyces. and suit lias been begun against the company to day, and (heir steamei ihcre will be attached. '1 he meeting of representatives of the Pennsylvania, Erie and New York Central Railroads, held in this city yesterday, adjourned with mutual good understanding.

The New York Central disclaimed participating iu the cutting going on by its Western connections. Eastward bound freights, however, are unsettled, the Grand Trunk Railroad being anxious to make lower rates than other lines, and the fear is of another railroad war. It is officially reported that the Lake Shore net earnings have improved lor file first quarter of tbevear ending March 31, over corresponding time last vear, $000,000, or about 1 percent, on the whole capital of 50.0O0,0O0, and ulso that the current cash resources of the company are very largely ahead of interest and other immediate demands. The rumors that have been circulated for some timo past to the effect that Sir. Vanderbilt would retire lroni the Presidency, it is scarcely necessary to say are without foundation.

The course of the more active slocks has lieen as follows: Lake Shore from (il Erie from Pacilie Mail from 18al8a 18aJ8al8alSal8. Western Union dull at from 68708. The contemptuous manner in which the Quarter Sessions jury, a few days since, treated the testimony of Mrs. Gordon and the Doctor's numerous followers made the fascinating physician flvrare that his power was on the wane, and rendered him anxious to quiisli the proceedings instituted against him.

A few days after his arrest in his handsome residence, 'J23 North Twelfth street, in the presence of numerous witnesses ho counted out upon a table eightceeu hundred dollars, and, grasping it in Ins iiand and waving it aloft, he exclaimed in a triumphant tone, "they can't do much with me, with this hack of The following day a gentleman called upon George" Haldoru, couusel for the prosecution, and requesting a private conversation, said in reference to the prosecution against Harbeson and ifis "friend," f'l would like to fix this matter. There is a i rent. al of ni.iiiev in it." He was immediately informed IhaJI conversation upon the subject was fruitlJT as the conviction of Dr. llarbesou was denumucd ly public ciamor auu necessity. Alter the disposal of a majority of the regular cases at the Central yesterday, Alderman Carpenter called for WillianjJIarbeson and Liz aie S.

Gordon. Dr. Iltsou alone stepped forward. Aaron Ttionuffiii, for the defend, nuts, requested aoutiuuauce for one week. Mr.

llaldorn objected, as the prosecution alone was represented in a preliminary hear iog, and one of his witnesses, of whom lie had a number, had been brought from New York. MBS. GORDON NOT ON HAND. James H. Ileverin, of counsel for the prosecution, said an application made for an absent defendant, a fugitive from justice, could not be entertained.

This is one of the well known tricks of Dr. Harbeson, a man who lias lived too long upon the mercy of the law. ''Where is your client?" asked Mr. Thompson. "The whole city of l'hiladelphia is our client," was the reply.

"It is very evident" said Alderman Carpenter, "that one of the defendants is in contempt and a fugitive from justice, and her bail must be forfeited." The Magistrate then called Mrs. Gordon's name thrice ami that of her surety, Kob crt Miller, and then announced the forfeiture of the bail. Mr. Thompson then asked that the warrant be quashed, referring to a decision of Justice Lewis, deciding that not only was a husband not a competent witness against it wife in such a case, but that a warrant issued upon his affidavit was illegal and an arrest upon it was a trespass. Messrs.

llaldorn and Heverin argued that under the new Constitution an affidavit was necessary, and that the competency of tho affiant was not a question of law. Alderman Carpenter decided that were Mrs. Gordon present he might livid the matter under consideration, but as far as Dr. Harbeson was concerned, it was not relevant. Ho then ordered that Harbeson be given a hearing on the charges of conspiring to indict Gordon and infringing the commandment relating to the marriage relation.

Augustus l'olevy was the first witness called. According to his statement the night belore the late trial in the Quarter Sessions Dr. Harbeson and Mrs. Gordon called upon his mother, and the doctor informed her that they had settled a certain suit instituted against her; "1 want you to come down to morrow," said the doctor, in his most seductive manner, "andstrear this man Gordon down to prison; the loafer ought to be there, and I will pav you live dollars if you will do it." Richard H. Gardiner, who rented a room in the Harbeson "hospital," from September 1 until October 28, 1S75, stated that the defendants lived together as man and wife; and from his own personal observations lie knew that their relations were conducted upon a degree of remarkable intimacy.

TUB FBIEKD" ADMITS HER MARRIAGE. Mrs. Gordon admitted to the witness that she was married to Henry C. Gordon, and stated tiiat he had leit nun in Chicago wneu sue naa succeeded in incarcerating him in an asylum for the insane. On cross exumiuation the witness stated that he did not sleep in Harbeson's house every night during his term of rental, because he was jif'raid of his life from what he observed.

Harbeson at this point, attired iu the most picturesque and sanctimonious of costumes, stepped forward to the centre of the hearing roam and placed himself iu a graceful position, with his arms folded and his eye lids closed. William nydam, of Camden, the next witness, saw Harbeson iu court previous to the late trial and heard him made an application before Judge Pratt for a continuance of tlie case against Henry C. Gordon. He stated that "we have no counsel, Mrs. Gordon is sick and I am sick and have been unable to attend to the matter." On the day of the trial the witness did not see Harbeson iu the court room, nor did he appear as a witness.

James II. Monckton, of New York, was called to prove the marriage of Mrs. Gordon and Henry C. Gordon, Mrs. Gordon having sworn in the Quarter Sessions that she was not the prosecutor's wife.

Mr. Thompson objected as not relevant. "We are not couliaed to the charges in the affidavit," said the prosecutor's couusel. "We have a right to bring a hundred charges, and we cannot do justice to the community in less than a hundred. propose to prove him guilty of subornation of perjury." Iu the absence of the feminine defendant the two pictures iu Henry C.

Gordon's possession, and which the Jourt in the late trial would not allow the jury to look upon, were shown to the witness and recognized as likenesses of "She and Henry C. Gordon," he continued, "were married in April, 187U, at 38 Sussex street, Jersey City, by ltev. Mr, Atkinson, of York Street Methodist Church. I engaged the minister, appointed the time and witnessed the ceremony. They went to Chicago the same month.

Her previous name was Mrs. Lizzie S. Samims." HAKUICSON KHCAPE8 A RIDE IN TIIE VAX. Detective Weyl then detailed the particulars of the arrest of the defendants. Mrs.

Mary Hill, pf 210 North Twelfth street, was culled to prove that Dr. Harbeson had requested her to attend the late trial and swear that she heard a shot fired, but proved a rather unsatisfactory witness. She ould remember absolutely nothing, but finally admitted that on Saturday last Harbeson loaned her $110. Mrs. Gardiner, wife of a former witness, corroborated her husband's testimony, and testified further that Mr.

Gordon fc tilled to her that she was married to Dr. Harbeson. There were lodgers coining and going all the time at the doctor's house," she said, in reply to a question troni Mr. Thompson. The prosecutor then requested a continuance of the case for one week so that they could endeavor to find Mrs.

Gordon and dispose of the entire matter at once. Hail to the amount was accordingly demanded, and Walter 11. Fit ton, of 1011 Cherry street, was again proffered as surety. He was put through a rigid examination of over an hour's duration as to his capaliiiitv. Alderman Carpenter, owing to the absence of Mrs.

Gordou and the discovery of the fact that her turciv, P.obert Miller, was entirely worthless, desired to be very particular about the character of the surety he accepted. Mr. l'itton was finally accepted, upon a joint bond with Dr. Ilurbeauii, until 3 o'clock this afternoon, when additional surety must be forthcoming. Tho by this time thoroughly frightened physician signed his name with a trembling hand, and, with a long drawn cigh of relief, hastened from the hearing room, rejoicing at his esnipe from an unceremonious jolting over the cobble stones, Moyauicnsiiigwiiid, In the liluck Maria.

The stock market yesterday was active, but its activity was not a healthy one. being due mainly to a bad break down in Heading shares and to an uneasy feeling in passenger railways.

The latter was started by the passage of a bill through one House of tlie Legislature at Harrisburg, fixing the fare at five cents, and attaching a heavy penalty to any transgression of the law. The former was tha culmination of a series of "bear" movements against a stock which, owing to a suspension of tho coal trade, had Deen compelled to pass its regular dividend.
