The Board very courteously accorded the interview, appreciating, aa it does, the desire of the eity for reliable aad definite information upon a subject of such importance to its interests. President Birkett at once remarked in the interview that the Board had oome to no conclusion in respect to the bridging of the Second street crossing of Mad Creek, except that it should be done at the earliest practicable day aad imm meaner to moe the wan ts of the locality. In answer to a question upon the de lay in beginning operations. President Birkett said there had been no delay except as caused by the elements. The Board had considered twoplaasof work.

one for a bridge supported by iron columns, and the other, for one of stone abutments, and in either case a coffer dam would be necessary, which is of. impossible construction and operation ia such high water with 14 feet of slush or sediment to work through before get ting to rook bottom. The Board has had Mr. Locke, the engineer, examine the premises and he says little if any progress oould be made in the present oooditiOn of the creek. The Board has, encountered another serious matter ia the extraordinary cost of an iron bridge, the rise the priee of iron having nearly doubled its cost sinoe building the Cedar river bridges Mr.

King, the contractor, informed President Birkett that he had just put up a 100 foot bridge at a cost of $2,900, The bridge of the same length over Low's Run oost the county but $1,600. The Board had estimated that an iron bridge oould be put over Mad Greek for but their present estimates with iron columns, bring the cost up to $6,000. But the opinion is held that pcrfeot security against floods requires that stone abutments should be laid; this would increase the oost to 000. The Board were asked if some tern porary structure might not be built. All the members expressed the opin ion that a temporary orossing would ooit $1,500 at least and would be in the way of operations as soon as work be gan on a permanent bridge One Trice CloUiing House OF S.

The forenoon meeting was oooupied with paper from Dr. Morgridge upon The History of Anatomy prior, to the Christian Era," which evoked a com plimentary discussion and a. vote of thanks. This paper was followed with one from Dr. Smith on "Hypertrophy of the Tonsils" which elicited a similar com pliment from the soeiety.

To the Editor-of the Journal: General Dodge, in his address of wel come, gave us many interesting facte and figures of early history as did the regular address by Mr. Craig, and more espeeially the remarks of Dr.

Ross, the old pioneer. These items are many of tin valuable, and like many relicts, time will increase their value. They are published in the Burlington papers, ana copied id tragmenls by tbe press throughout the State. We are somewhat disappointed that oar friends at Burlington did not pro vide for the publication of all the pro ceedings in a pamphlet, to whioh could be made some additions for a book of permanent history. Suoh was the oon temptation of our Scientific Academy such was the expectation of our State Librarian, Mrs.

Bur-dett, secretary of the oelebratioo, aad editor of the Hawkeye, aad was disap pointed to learn that it was not oon tempi ated to make any other publica tion than in the newspapers.

But at the earnest solicitation of Mr. Calkins and myself, he said he would see what other gentlemen in Burlington wool a do in the matter, the conclusion whioh we had no time to wait for, but rather expeot that the conclusion of the treat historical celebration went up in a brilliant sky rocket. I had hoped that there would have been a committee on documentary history, statistics, education, literature religion, etc, to have gathered many items for our young people winter evening entertainment. The cost of the magnificent glow of fire works, with whioh we were so well pleased, would have given us a pamph ret, a more permanent and useful rec ord to have banded down to the next generation who will be anxious to have it at the Centennial Celebration 50 years hence. these things ye onght to have done and not to have left the other undone," the weightier matters of his tory.

There had been an impression, at first through ignorance, that the Board would do nothing until the oity acted, and was doing nothing but sitting baok on its dignity, etc but it was well known now that the Board had given the matter its earnest consideration and was seeking in every way for a solution of the diffioolt problem and the oity accorded it the fullest respect and confidence.

The interview called out the fast that the members of the Board? had studied the situation on the spot, in company with engineers, as well as informally in session, and that they have given to the subject as oon rant a study and as broad and liberal a view as any oitiisn oould demand. It follows from the foregoing that the Board are consulting the best! authorities for the best plan of bridging the oreek that work will begin sjs soon as practicable and that the Board will expect the oity to meet tnoir liberality ia a reciprocal spirit.
