DAILY NEWS. Thursday Morning June 13. 1968 Montreal Loses Goalie In NHL Player Draft MONTREAL (AP) Jacues Plante, one of the. best goaltenders in NatiOHal Hockey League history, was the top name selected Wednesday in the circuit's annual intraleague draft. Plante said he will make a comeback.

Plante, retired for three seasons, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues from the New York Rangers' reserve list. Plante, who starred for 11 years in the NFL--nine with Montreal and two with New York--before retiring in 1965, worked out briefly with Oakland last year but scrapped comback plans at that time. Now 39, Plante returns with a career 2.41 goals against average and 63 shutouts. He won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goalie six times, including a record five straight.

The Rangers, in a postdraft trade, reacquired left winger- Dave Balon from Minnesota. Balon had been involved in the deal that sent Plante to the Rangers in 1963. In exchange, the North Stars received dpfpnsoman Wayne Hillman and two rookies, Joe. Johnson and Dan Sequin. To complete another transaction, the Philadelphia Flyers acquired forward Gerry Melnyk and defenseman Daryl Edestrand from St.

Louis. Oakland made the first selection of the draft session, picking defenseman Carol Vadnais from Montreal. The Seals then exposed Larry Cahan, another de- fenseman, and the Cana'diens exercised their option to draft him. Toronto and Minnesota were the two most active clubs. The Maple Leafs acquired Larry Mickey from New York, Bill Sutherland from Minnesota and Gary Marsh from North Stars had picked up Sutherland from Philadelphia and when they lost him to the Leafs, they claimed Toronto defense- man Duane Rupp.

Minnesota also obtained Larry Hillman, Wayne's brother, from Tronto and Goalie Fern Rivard from Philadelphia. The Rangers claimed Bill Plager, one of three hockey playing brothers, from Minnesota. Detroit picked up forward Brian Conacher from Toronto and Pitsburgh acquired forward Charlie Burns from Oakland. The Seals then took George Knnik from the Penguins. In addition to Plante, St.

Louis chose Myron Stankiewicz from Los Angeles. The Blues had drafted Stankiewicz from Hershey of the American League on Tuesday, then traded him to LA for Terry Gray and reclaimed him from the Kings Wednesday. Philadelphia picked Ron Buchanan from Boston and exposed defenseman Jean Gauthier, who was drafted by the Bruins. Philadelphia also selected Larry Hale from Minnesota. The North Stars then picked Sutherland and passed him along to the Maple Leafs for Rupp.

McCarthy and operated one of the nation's most successful dog racing tracks, died Tuesday after a long illness. He was 76. At the time of his death he was chairman of the board of Denver's Mile High Kennel Club, had been instrumental in building the club and was active in its affairs until slowed down last year by a heart attack.

For more than 20 years, McCarthy waged a one-man campaign to have pari-mutuel racing legalized in Colorado, meeting with success in 1948 when voters approved a measure legalizing betting. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, two sons, George Jr. of Pueblo, and Thomas, who is general manager of the Multnomah Kennel Club, Portland, and four sisters. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday. sacrifice fly by Robinson.

Red Sox Now 9V? Back Boston Still Team To Beat By JACK HAND Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK The view from way down there deep in the second division still is encouraging to Eddie Stanky of the Chicago White Sox. "It's still too early to count anybody out," said Stanky whose Sox got left at the post and lost their first 10 starts this season. "I said in Florida and I'll say it again that Boston is the team to beat," said Stanky. "After all, they are the champions although I understand Jim Lonborg's shoulder is stiff." "The big surprise this year has been the hitting, or rather lack of hitting by the entire league.

I thought it might be weaker but not this week. "The only answer is the pitching. They are getting better every year. In years to come you are going to see more and more no hitters and low hit games." Stanky still has his incentive program by which a player is rewarded for an outstanding pitching or hitting job. He has not had to hand out many so far this season.

"Tommy John got a new suit of clothes when he broke our losing streak," said Stanky, whose club rose from last to eighth place with a 9-5 win Tuesday night over New York. "We also have assessments," he said. "We've always had the year when I was in St. Louis we'd have a big party from that fund. It used to cost me $400 out of my own pocket.

I make it a point to give it all back to the players in some form." Most managers call assess- Gallopin Ghost' Reaches 65 Today them on my clubs. At the end of ments by another name--fines. JACK BEAHAM Winter Baven News-Chief WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) Harold "Red" Grange's number comes up Thursday--his Social Security number, that is. The Galloping Ghost of Illinois football immortality will be 65 years old.

"I knew it was coming," Grange said; "but I was sort of putting it off. I was hoping the whole thing would go away." Actually, the one-time scourge of the gridiron has been retired for a couple of years, except for a bit of promotional work for a brewing company. He has been transformed, by easy stages, into, the squire of Indian Lake Estates in central Florida. His spacious, airy home, wide open to the breezes tha drift across flat cattle country, has a screen-enclosed swimming pool, planters bright with tropical flowers and plenty of chaises into which Old 77 can plop down and relax when the urge hits him. Grange mows his own lawn and contents himself with gravitating between the golf course a half-mile away, his two boats docked in a channel leading to a lake and Ms television set where he watches football and baseball games.

He isn't an avid golfer most of his neighbors. "I play for fun and exercise he said, "but the game 1 like lacks something. It would be better if once in a while someone came up from behind and tackled you just as you were hitting the ball." Forty-four years after he electrified the sports world by running 92, 70. 57 and 42 yards for touchdowns in the first quarter of a Big Ten championship game with Michigan, Grange still is in great shape. He is close to his old playing weight of 170 pounds and his hair is still red except around the edges.

Carpenter refused to divulge the conversation he had with Allen, saying it was confidential. He did say he talked to the outfielder-third baseman like a father to a son and tried to explain the errors of his ways. Allen said he talked with Carpenter about the booing and other things. "I told him the writers had something wrong. I didn't hurt myself on a horse.

I've had the injury (groin injury) since spring training." Allen said he didn't play on the recent seven-day road trip because his name wasn't on the line-up card." "I've played before when I was hurt. This time I wasn't on the card." Muthews Oh Disabled List DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Tigers placed veteran infielder Eddie Mathews on the disabled list Wednesday.
