SOUTHTOWN ECONOMIST. SUNDAY. AUGUST 29, 1943 Southtown Posts Wfll March Today In Legion Parade Two and Corps from Area Will Abo Participate. Southtown veterans of the first World war who are now members of the American Legion are turning put today for the state convention of their organization downtown. About 50,000 Illinois Le- gionnaires are in the city for the meeting which began Friday and ends tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Today at 2 o'clock there will be a four-hour parade in which Southtowners will take part. It proceed south on Chicago ave. to Adams west to LaSalle st. and north to Wacker dr. The reviewing stand has been erected in front of the LaSalle st.

side of the City hall. Square post of the Legion, comprised of Southtowners, will have its 70-piece drum and bugle corps in the parade, the George L. Giles post will have its 40-piece bugle corps in the line and the 32-man bugle corps of the James J. Zientek post of Southtown will also take part. Drum and Bugle Contest.

The corps of these same posts have entered the drum and bugle contest which will take place today at the Hotel Sherman. Although this is the Legion's 25th state convention, it is the first time it has ever been held in Chicago. It is a larger convention, from point of view of attendance, than the national convention in Omaha next month will be. The national meeting will be attended by a limited number of delegates because of transportation difficulties. One of the highlights of the Illinois convention will occur this morning when a Gold Star morial service takes place at 11 o'clock at the band shell in Grant I park.

Ten thousand persons are expected for this event. The sermon will be delivered by Com. Philip Nicholas, navy chaplain at Navy pier. New Members Inducted. Last night a mass induction of new members occurred in front Of the City hall.

Five hundred young men who are discharged veterans of the present war were among those admitted to the Legion at this ceremony. Ferre C. a past Illinois commander, Francis E. Phelan, the present state commander, and Jay Brown, Cook county commander, were the speakers. The parade this afternoon will have about 40,000 marchers, including soldiers, sailors, marines, Soast guardsmen, girls of the Wacs, Waves and Marine women reserves, city and state police, Illinois reserve militia and Legion posts and auxiliaries.

VETERAN GROCERS Martin Colby, 6753 Halsted Southtown grocer, was one of the Libby, McNeill and Libby dealers who received a. gift of $25 from the company because he and the company both had their 75th birthday anniversaries this year. --Economist Photos Peter Vogt, 1011 W. 70th Englewood grocer, was another who received $25 as a 75th birthday gift from the canning company which began its existence with a small plant at 16th and State sts. in 1868 when politicians were booming Grant for president.

Southtown Pilot Cited for His Part In Sicily Invasion Flight Officer Also Decorated for His Work as Squadron Leader. Flight Officer Paul Jay Fischel, 24-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fischel, 7153 Princeton has been cited by Gen. Dwight Eisenhower for safely transporting paratroopers into Sicily without plane escorts while flying "blind." Flight Officer Fischel, who also received the air medal for his work as squadron leader in that flight, in a letter to his parents, told of his unexpected reunion with his brother-in-law, Lt.
