Bradshaw Stars Steeler Quarterback Dissatisfied. But Apparently Has Regained Job NEW ORLEANS (UPI) Terry Bradshaw passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third, but said even though Pittsburgh beat New Orleans 28-7 Monday night he didn't feel he played well enough. But Steelers head coach Chuck Noll thought he did and said he would start Bradshaw next week against Houston, ending for one week, anyway, Noll's game of quarterback roulette. Bradshaw's statistics were not all that startling. He completed eight of 19 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns and rushed nine times for 99 yards and another touchdown.

Asked if Bradshaw's play resolved the question of who's No. 1 in Joe Gilliam or Terry Hanratty -Noll said it did. "Yes. it does for a while," the coach said. "Bradsaw starts Sunday against Houston." Bradshaw said, "Any win feels good.

But I should have played better. The passing attack was not good enough." The Saints, who decided to bench quarterback Archie Manning just before the half because he was only two of 10 for nine yards, scouted the Steelers offense well. Bradshaw said. 'You've got to give that New Orleans defense credit," said Bradshaw, who played his college ball at the other end of the state at Louisiana Tech. "They really came after us.

But after I threw that first touchdown pass (31 yards to Frank Lewis) I felt better." Sizing up the Steelers play, Bradshaw said "We had good pass, run. Our mistakes hurt (two lost) and penalties (10 for 115 yards). But in the second half our backs ran much better." Lynn Swann started the Steelers off in that second half by returning a Saints punt 64 yards for a touchdown with 1:27 elapsed in the third quarter. "I had super key blocks," the rookie from Southern California said. "I saw only three Saints jerseys.

Glen Edwards threw a good block." Pittsburgh running back Franco Harris finished with 114 yards in 19 carries as the Steelers improved their record to 8-2-1 and kept a IVz-game lead over Cincinnati in the AFC's Central Division. "I'm not looking for 1,000 yards this year so much as I'm thinking about the Super "We felt like we had to come down here and play a hell of a ballgame," the Penn State product said. "Our offensive line really came on nicely. We knew the Saints would be high after beating Los Angeles 20-7 last week and we just knew we had to play a hell of a ballgame." Coach John North, who saw his Saints drop to 4-7 in the NFC's West, allowing Los Angeles to clinch the division title, seemed to be at the end of his patience with his young ballclub. "We didn't play well," North said.

"I'm tired of making ex- cuses'for professional football players. One week we beat Los Angeles and tonight Pittsburgh beat the hell out of us- offensively, defensively and special teams. What can you say? You tell me." LHS also holds a commanding 30-2 advantage in lifetime wins overLCHS. The reason for optimism in the Beavers camp this year is the fact that coach Frank Kuhn welcomed no less than eight returning lettermen back into the fold. Granted, last year the Beavers posted a very mortal 5-19 record, but a season- ending spurt of both fine play and enthusiasm, plus the fact that everybody iii back, presented Kuhn with a new purpose this season. Also, the Beavers will be participating in the Leb-Lan League this season, instead of the Class-A- dominated Central Penn Catholic League. Expected to start for the Beavers tonight will be 5-6 junior Matt Schlegel and 5-11 senior Mike Lushinsky in the backcourt.

Alabama was an overwhelming choice for No. 1 by United pfess International Board of Coaches after Ohio State defeated Michigan 12-10 Saturday. The Wolverines loss, plus Harvard's victory over Yale, left Alabama the only undefeated and untied team eligible for the national championship. But the Crimson Tide must first defeat SEC arch-rival Auburn Friday and then Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. Alabama received 31 of the 34 first-place votes cast, while second-ranked Oho State captured the other three.

"Now I'm out signing autographs and people are paying me to do Hargrove's autograph price is apt to go up sharply now that he has been named rookie of the year by the Baseball Writers Association of America in a landslide vote. 'I thought that I had a pretty good chance to get it," said Hargrove, the Texas Rangers first baseman who jumped from Gastonia in the Western Carolina League last season. "But I didn't want to get my hopes up too much and then be all disappointed. "Of course I'm thrilled with the honor. But we didn't win' the pennant and that is a disappointment.

And I think I can play better, defensive ball. I made nine errors at first base last year and I think I can do better than that." Hargrove hit .323 (second best behind Rod Carew) and drove in 66 runs for Texas in only his second season in professional ball. He received 16 1-2 out of 24 possible first place votes-and easily outdistanced Chicago White Sox shortstop Bucky Dent. Right fielder Jeff Burroughs was named last week as the American League player of the year. Earlier Ranger manager Billy Martin had been named UPI's American League manager of the year and right handed pitcher Ferguson Jenkins was picked as UPI's comeback player of the year. The Rangers finished second behind Oakland last season in the American League West, and although the consensus is that Texas needs pitching help to overtake the A's, Hargrove said he was not hesitant about fielding the same team again in 1975. "Everybody'likes to have help," he said, "but I think we can all have better years than we had last year. I would not mind at all lining up with the same guys and giving it a try." Hargrove, a native of the Texas Panhandle town of Plainview, was an instant hero in Arlington.

He batted .371 in his first 59 games and people in his home town became so excited they talked officials of the local radio station to pick up the Ranger broadcasts. As Hargrove's talent became obvious, American League pitchers began experimenting with ways to get the rookie out. "The second and third time around the league they started trying different things," Hargrove said. "I think the second time we faced the Yankees they had some success with me throwing fast balls up and in. "But I was in a little slump right then and I wasn't hitting much of anything.

I guess that "up and in" stuff got around the league because everybody started pitching me that way. But when I got out of the slump I began hitting that stuff pretty good." But not even Hargrove feels he can slap any pitcher around. "Bert Blyleven (of the Minnesota Twins) gave me all kinds of problems," Hargrove said. "Whenever I faced him he really had that curve ball working."
