(UPI) Teachers and officials in the Huron Valley School District said Monday they will refuse to enforce a state law which makes it illegal for students under 18 to smoke. They defied a prosecutor to challenge their stand in court. They said they want to teach the students and not harass them with the law which the teachers claim makes them 'perform police functions." "If we aren't successful in getting the law changed we will go ahead and defy it," said Thomas Collins' School Board president. The School Board wrote letters to six state lawmakers urging them to support pending legislation that would free school officials from enforcing the law which prohibits persons under 18 from smoking.

"We will allow students less than 18 to smoke outside the school building on school property to prove a point," the letter said. The letter also challenged the Oakland County prosecutor to "bring us into court and we'll find out how much that law is really worth." worth." The debate on under-18 smoke started when a citizen complained to Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson that minors were smoking while attending a public meeting. The School Board followed the complaint by adopting a strict antismoking policy which includes patrols by teachers of outside smoking areas and an antismoking education program with tough penalties for violators. "But all this has not effected any significant changes," said the letter, which was made public Monday.

Patterson said he hopes the district does not openly flout the law, and warned, "But if they, the school board, take a 'We dare you' attitude, my decision would be obvious." 3 Companies Out On Alarm An electric furnace at the residence of Ira E. Since the inception of the company program in 1951. nearly 15 million seedlings have been furnished to landowners in 13 southcentral Pennsylvania counties, including Lebanon. Tree seedlings available this year under the Glatfelter program are white pine, red pine, Austrian pine, Virginia pine, Norway spruce, white spruce, European larch, Japanese larch, black locust and European alder. Lebanon DaiJ New Tuesda November 24,1974 Asks Reason For Increase U.S. Senator Hugh Scott (R- Pa.) today asked the U.S. Postal Service to produce a "full justification immediately" of increases in first class postage reported to take effect next year. In a telegram to E. T.

Klassen, Postmaster General of the United States, Senator Scott said he feared the effect of a postal increase would be "anti-consumer and inflationary." It has been widely reported that the first class postage rate will be increased to 12 cents or 13 cents next July. "Past increases in the cost of postage have not necessarily been followed by increases in the efficiency of our mail service," Scott said. ''The people of this country demand an immediate justification of higher mail rates if they are expected to pay them."
