Andersen was born in Denmark, a descendant of the royal family. He followed several family members to Chicago in 1905.

He sold his small business in Chicago after two years and moved to Nebraska where lie enrolled at Nebraska Normal. After graduation he spent several years as a homesteader in Montana.
