City were ready to make a contract with Records Waldu, of Brooklyn, arrived hero the company The resolution requested yesterday afternoon with a bill which Mayor Van Wyck and Controller Coler'to provides for the enlargement of the Hall send their views to the Legislature re of Records. It was Introduced by Sen- garding the adrl suability of the city mak-' ator Marshall, who a Steed that it be ad- lng such a contract.

The resolution was vanced to a third reading, but Senator prepared by James A. Pryor, a member had expreaseddt In an many wnya; -hame, that aha had not reallied the difference In their aevernl but had accept' ed all aa a girl would the advance of true love. She could never look him In the face again, she concluded A cough from Tim, the office boy, roused her. She had forgotten him. "I say, Miaa Gerald," Bald flm aoftly, yer know Im yer true frlen, after wot you done fur an' me when ehe wae elck, an I wish you wouldn't mind an wouldnt look ao white aiT deary.

Tm sick, that la all." 14 "I wouldnt itald. "-1 -Tim, wheil 'Mr. nton returna tell him I was taken ill and went home. Here la half-dollar; pleaee dont tell him anything you heard. If you are my friend, Tim, you wont, and she left the office.

1 "Now," mused Ttm, "'this la exciting, Jest like the plays on tha stage. I arflers wanted to bar a hero In an now's rpy chance. Hown I do It? I cant loae my Job by mindin' Other folks' blsnlsa. He delivered Miaa Gerald's message, but no surprise was expressed. Talnt no stage play after all; hes too tame, he muttered.

The following day Donald received a letter from Miaa Gerald saying she would not return to her position. He reread the letter; intuitively be seemed to know something was wrong. -Tim, was Miss Gerald very 111 yesterday afternoon?" Now the plot's beginning; stage play, aura enuff, skid the boy to himself. She wan all right till your slBter come, an after that she was pretty bad." After my sister cams inf" "Yes, sir, she Come In, and bein' as you warnt here, she sot an' rested an' talked awhile, yer Bee. "What did she say?" "Now, boss, cant tell yer; Im busting to; It's Jlst like the folks on tbe stage, but Miss Gerald gave me E0 cents not te tell yer, an she's ben awful good to an' will give you those two silver dollars to tell me. Tim held (he dollars In his hand. "An' won't! enny trouble fur Miss Gerald, an you won't turn ber off? "No." I. "Nor neether. "No." "Honor bright, hoes?" Honor bright," "Well, yer see, twaa this srway, began the boy excitedly, Your etster come In an she told Miss as how you was awfully In love wtH a gbl whats cornin, to your houBfl this week; a gal thet's pretty and rich; thet youre a-gola' to marry her, an yer so dead gone on her thet you want to be a Judge, an' yer A RENT ydu a -little more attentive to Miss Gerald than It la necessary for an attorney to be to his typewriter?" aaked Margaret Fenton of tier brother.

"Probably," he answered, "but not more attentive than I find it agreeable, atster mine. 7What taste you She Isnt even pretty." "Not particularly no; but all men are not fascinated by a pretty face; there are other qualities admire. 'If you want to be' married tor your ihoney by an ambitious young- woman of no social position, no family prestige very well "I believe, Margaret, the difference between tbe Geralds andourselven la atmply a question of money. Mother, wan It not yourself who asked me to employ Min Gerald?" Tea, her father and yourn were college chums; your father chose a mercantile life and made -money; Mr. Gerald entered the ministry; he and bln wife are educated, refined people, but, aa Margaret nays, are poor.

I am glad ypu could show your fathers friend a favor by finding employment for hie daughter. Perhaps we should have had her at the, house oftener. -I think Donald ban done the honors for the family quite generously, mamma. By the way, Donald, Carrie Denning la coming thin week; can you possibly spare time to help entertain her?" 'Gladly. I shall be aa attentive to your friends as I desire you to be to mine.

And he left for the office. -Margaret, don't say any mors against Annla Gerald; It Is Just the way to drive Donald to propose to her. Let him alone. I will trust his Judgment "A man In Jove has no Judgment," replied the daughter, Then added, under her breath, -There are ways of preventing his making a fool of himself. I have set my heart on his marrying Carrie, ril drop In the offloe to-day Donald said he would be out" The typewriter and office boy were alone.

Mr. Fenton will not be until 4 oclock," said Mias Gerald. -How provoking," returned Margaret "I will rest a moment If you dont object. -Certainly not," was the answer. "Mamma and I were talking about you this morning," continued Margaret; we were saying we must have you at the house oftener, as eur fathers were dear friends." "It would bo very pleasant I un sure." Just now I am busy; a dear friend, Carrie Denning, comes this week.

Shes almost In the family, you know, and Donald has a round of gayetlea planned tn her honor. I tell him he la getting gay for a staid lawyer, who aspires to be a Judge, but you know men In are such unaccountable creatures. "I suppose so," murmured the girl, dreamily, aa her eyes rested on the flowers rile bad found on her desk that morning. i "If you were a sister of one, you would know It But We all leva her and are willing to do Mamma has Just set her heart on the marl rage. Carrie la charming and she has wealth, beauty and position, all that Donald's wfie should have.

But dear me. I'm keeping you from your work; how thoughtless In me! Good by, dear," -There," she ejaculated as she dosed the door; she may think about that and I'll keep Donald out of the way." Miaa Gerald leaned her head on her Shame mild anger filled her heart. The first Idea, was to prepare dinner of four cournen, oup, tleh, meat and leuert. THIS we have done, and the change. And improvements upon our first effort are now In order. Tha aoup stock prepared for our first soup will prove equally acceptable for others and Just aa essential. An always popular soup and one easily prepared is the vermicelli.

Take twe wince, of vermicelli and break It Into pieces about ons Inch long, and plane it tn boiling salted water, letting It cook for about ten minutes; remove and let It drip, oool It with cold water and drip again. In a stew-pan warm two quarts of stock and when, nearly at tbe balling; point put In the ver-. mtcelll, but do not let It boll. Serve with this aoup grated or Parme-. san cheese.

Cheese in aoup may be novelty to some of your guests, but it Is very palatable and greatly adds to tha dish. Right here I may as well say that you may prefer macaroni soup In the earns way, except that the macaroni should bs broken Into half-inch pieces and cooked slightly longer than the Tho time of cooking will vary with therawr material, but whett It is soft It Is dons sufficiently to un In the soup. In cooking macaroni, spaghetti, vermicelli or any Italian paste be sure and have water enough oo it will not boll out. and do not allow It to cease boiling until cooked. If you wish a spaghetti sou is treat it as you would vermicelli, cooklnv In salted water about twenty minutes before adding It to the stock.

Another popular soup that you will desire to prepare la the Julienne. This Is a vegetable aoup, but differs from most others In that tha vegetables are not cooked In water before being added to the stock. The simplest way to prepara this soup ts to slice Into fine strips one carrot, one-half of a turnip, a small section of cabbage and one small onion, having the strips an Inch or an Inch and one-half long, and place them In a stew-pan with a pat of butter and a teaspoonful of sugar. Let them worm up lu the butter. Add two quarts ot stock ndf cook about one hour and a half.

In tho season you may add Just before the soup Is ready to gerve a few spoonfuls ot green peas and a sprinkling of chopped parsley os the soup goes to the table. The abovo are descriptive of several of tha gimp1 soups to bs made when once the stock has been prepared. The color of the coup may easily bs regulated by the use, of caramel. Caramel la but another namo for burned butter and ougar. You can make It yourself In this way: Take two parts of sugar to one of butter; put In a I large Iron spoon and place over tbe coalo, stirring the contents gently until a deep brown liquid lo obtained.

You will also need caramel to color sauces, and gravies. PRESERVED CANNED SALMON. A can of salmon after being opened Is not always used up at one meal, and If put away Without special preparation Is apt to dry up or to taste qjly tn a few doya To' preserve the salmon put the left over In s' bowl or other deep dish, sprinkle with pepper, add a few whols cloves, a blade of mace, cover with cold vinegar and the fish will keep a week longer in fine eondltlon. I BAKED OATMEAL. Mix In a saucepan one pound of oatmeal with one tablespoonul of butter, one pint of water and salt.

Place tn moderate oven and bake for fifteen or twenty minutes, and serve with soma butter or' milk and cream apart BUTTERMILK ROLfjs. Take two coffee cups of buttermilk, and stir Into it one teaspoonful of sal-eratus, dissolved In a little hot water, and stir Into this about five cups of flour; beat thlo up lightly and bake la gem pans. i emsss DELICATE! CAKE. Three cupfuls of flour, two of sugar, three-fourths cupful of sweet milk, whites of six eggs, half a cupful of butter, teaspoonful of cream tartar, one-half teaspoonful of soda Flavor with lemon. APPLES FRIED IN BUTTER.

Beat three eggs well, add a tablespoonful of sugar and three of flour; slice the apples; dip them In the batter and fry in butter; take them up, sprlnkle.wlth powdered sugar and serve hot. BOSTON BROWN Mix ons cupful sweet milk, two cupfuls sour milk, one cupful flour, four cupfuls of cornmeal, two teaspoonfuls Of soda; steam three hours and then brown few minutes In a quick oven. FRUIT JELLY. Dissolve ono-half box gelatine tn twlos the quantity of water (It will require about one hour te do this); odd the Juice of two lemons and strain; whoa It begins to thicken add two oranges, cut up, two bananas, ons -quarter of a pound of figs, and one-quarter of a pound of Enu walnuts, and set sway to cooL SOUR MILK DOUGHNUTS.
