It is also planned to give packets to the children at cost.

Where the soil is unusually heavy, the park district will plow the plots for the youngsters. "Sympathetic volunteer leadership is necessary to make these school gardens successful," said Mr. Dunham. "The park district is ready to provide plots for as many as 30,000 children, but we are asking that the plots be restricted to grammar school children in grades 5 to 8 inclusive. Younger children can join their older brothers or sisters and help with a plot instead of carrying the whole responsibility themselves.

Gardeners Need Help. "Young people beyond the grammar school age limit might exercise their gardening inclination to better advantage by seeking employment i nearby suburban truck gardeners and farmers who are in dire need of The park district hopes the men and women volunteers will have garden or farm experience. Persons interested are asked to telephone Harrison 5252, the park district office. A i we meet with reasonable success in this project." Mr. Dunham said, "these 30,000 gardens will produce not less than 900 tons of fresh vegetables.

The economic contribution, however, is only a part of the benefits. If we can create a love of gardening in so large a number of the city's school children, will be building men and women who will make sure Chicago remains the leading garden city of the world." Experts Will Cooperate. The plan as outlined by the OCD Victory garden department provides not only for responsible adult leadership for groups, but also for parental approval and responsibility for keeping the plot in presentable condition.
