City Wide Vote On Public Housing Being Prposed (Continued from Page 1) sion of the council. Pro-public housing aldermen have indicated that they will attempt to have the order revoked. Mayor Kennelly has declined to comment upon the statement of policy which was approved in the "omnibus" bill, undetected by aldermen who support public housing. The mayor has likewise declined to make any comment upon the proposed referendum vote on the housing program. Alderman DuBois pointed out that the City of Chicago has never held a true referendum vote on public housing.

Mary Ellen McDonald and the late Corneluis. John. Jamcb, and Thomas. of bonds, the voters of the 9th ward, were 5 to 1 against the issuance of public housing bonds, the alderman pointed out. DuBois asserts that officials of the Chicago Housing Authority and "pressure' groups which are pushing for the erection of 40,000 more units of tax free housing in Chicago, deliberately cloud the issues involved.

Those who would have us give "blanket" approval to the program which the CHA proposes constantly seek to confuse the issues, DuBois declared. "They would have you believe that public housing wouldn't cost the taxpayers a penny--that it's a free gift from the federal government. What they won't tell you is that public housing, over the life of the projects they propose to build in Chicago, would cost all taxpayers, homeowners and property owners of this city many times more than the government's "gift" as they foot the bill for public services to housing project tenants such as schools, health and sanitation, fire, police, etc." That "Sleeper" DuBois had a comment to make on the "sleeper" order which was put through in the "omnibus Bill" at last Thursday's meeting of the city council providing that "the city council establish a policy in the future of aproving for public housing sites only those locations now in areas designated as slum areas or land immediately adjacent to areas now adjacent to slum areas." "Every honest public housing advocate should be for that order," DuBois declared "because it is what the federal government meant when it conceived publjc housing and set up funds for th'tt purpose." Meanwhile Alderman aft '13th, author of the order which would limit public housing projects to slum areas, had something to say of the informal opinion given by Corooration Counsel Adamowski that the "order has no legal implications and is not i binding on the council." "Just Begun To Fight" I've just "begun to fi'g'ht." declared Egan in defending his "I entered that order because of the upsetting influence of an indefinite public housinst policy, particularly in the 13th ward where I reside. Because of the constant threat of the CHA to come into our community and build a oublic housing project, people are hesitant to build and builders arc reluctant to build. I want this thing settled Other aldermen were of thp opinion that Epran's order will ERMINIO DUGHETTI Erminio Dughetti.
