Bair, merchant at Ht. Nebo whilst returning from tinaveiey'e mill, on Thursday of last week, was an eye-witness to a very singular operation. The operation consisted in a black snake swallowing a garter snake. Mr. Bair says the black Bnake waa about three feet long, and the garter soake about two feet, and that when be saw them the black had suooeeded In disposing of about one-half of tbe garter.

Upon seeing Mr. Bair the SDake disgorged its prey, and retreated under the fence, probably to resume its meal again, when the Interruptions had passed. The garter was dead whether it had bean killed by the black or not, Mr. Bair oould not state. We have beard of dog eating dog, but this la the first time we have heard of a real case ef 8Dake eating snake, though tbe zoologists state as a fact that tbe variety of black snakes do sometimes prey upon other species of the reptilia.

Dbto Brooklyn, ttxy 19. V1 ATf FRNl elWete'Ji -T-E 'D vmemt te 4r Worte. to Bttmobs reached Secretary Windom some weeks Ago that the Contingent Fund of tho United Btateo Treasury Department waa be leg disbursed in a manner to excite grave suspicions of dishonesty. An Investigation waa ordered, and 'the results fully confirm tbs ex 1st an ee of a ring of corrupt subordinates. some of them bolding high positions.

The appropriation for the Contingent Fund of this department Is usually about $150,003 a year. The money is disbursed by the Chief Clerk for purchases made, the vouohers also being paid on his approval. Within four years this has been relaxed so that a subordlaato has performed the duty. This fund has been very extravagantly expended. The Investigation shows surprising and manifestly unnecessary disbursements for furniture, for lumber, for books and atatlonery, all at high prices, and In some oases very liberally for purely private use.

Costly bookcases, desks, lounges and chairs are reported to have been delivered at the residences of various Treasury officers, paid for out of this fund; It Is Intimated that other funds In the Treasury Department have been similarly abused. Crop reports from tbe Interior of Arkansas are rather discouraging. The continuous rains have prevented working, and the crops aie badly In grass. To add to the misfortunes ot tbe farmers, a species oficut-worm has made its appearance, and has completely destroyed the stands of cotton on a great many large plantations: The greet trouble now 1 that there is not enough seed to replant. As tbe quick train from New York to Boston, which left on Katuiday afternoon, was running at its usual speed near Hartford. the engineer saw, when It was too late to stop tbe tram, a drove of eows upon tne track. He saw that his only chance of safety was in throwing the cattle from the track, for at do great distance from him, aad approaching him on another track, was a heavy freight train. He put on all possible steam ana dashed his tram into the drove, killing four, which were thrown a great distance from tbe track, and thus prevented not omy a derailment, but a possible collision with the freight train. Term on I Railroad.

On June 1 the short strip of railroad known is tbe Pulltvan Railroad, extending from Bellows Falls to Windsor, Vt on the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River, which has for many years been under the control and management of tne Central Vermont Railroad Company, will pass into tbe hands of the Conneotioat River Railroad Company. This will out off sn important lick of railroad track by which a connection has been made between tbe main line of the Central Vermont road (running through Montpelier and White River Junction, VA) and the Cheshire and Fttchburg roads to Boston. Tha Central Vermont Company, therefore. Intends to use its Rutland branch, running from Burlington to Bellows Falls, as a main line for freight purposes, and all through freight trains between Boston and tbe West over that line will, after June be run via Rutland and Burllngton.lnstead ot via Montpelier as now. Improvements are being made along the line of the Rutland division with that object In vlew.and the side tracks at many ot the stations are being extended.

Something which is supposed be very remarkable has occurred nt Jacksonville, Fla. The Mayor of that municipality is a Jew, And his name la Dzlalyneki. It waa supposed, when he was elected, that he would be a little blind, for obvious reasons, to violations of tbe Sunday law, and especially that hi would permit his Hebrew brethren to keep tbeirhopa open on tbe Lords day. He was strongly supported, for this reason, by tbe Israelites, bat he turns out different sort -of Mayor from what they expected. He insists apon Sunday closing, and is, therefore, charged by his coreligionists with "bowing the knee to tbe Philistine.

Mayor Dsialyneki treats these complaints with perfect neglect, end is presented with flowers by the Sabbath-keeper on Mondays. Pour thousand one hundred and twenty-sine immiyrnntfi were landed at Castle Gar-len yesterday, making: 8,390 since Saturday. Dr. W. ROSS Writes cuor nu, Um Oomunr, Dnnnu.
