Page 4 Fair Lawn-Elmwood Park-Saddle Brook Shopper, Wednesday, January 2, 1985 FL sewer back-ups A month or so ago, some homeowners on eastern Berdan Avenue wrote The Shopper complaining about sewer backups in their lines. The borough sewer department is usually dispatched to clear the owners lines, something that very few towns do for their citizens. There were numerous responses to the inquiry from all over town indicating these back-ups are all too frequent and too many. Also as far as can be determined, they are not related to those connected with the construction of the new connections between the old Saddle River Road plant and the Passaic Valley Commission plant. Borough officials attribute most of the stoppages to excessive use of grease or other heavy materials.

But I think the real cause is expanding tree roots, which will force or break their way through cast iron pipes or through the clay sewer lines so many builders frequently used. Naturally these roots continue to expand in the pipes eventually closing off the lines. The obvious answer since the borough owns all the shade trees on the street, is for the town to remove its trees, the roots and repave the sidewalks. Thomas H. Johns Cathedral School, Paterson, will be 150 years old! With pride and a great sense of accomplishment, Saint Johns can point to its many graduates who hold positions of vital importance to the welfare of our many communities. The time has now come for Saint Johns to ask the help of those graduates. Like many of the students who passed through its halls, St. John is still educating the children of immigrant families, whose parents work long and hard hours to secure a quality education for their children. Even though they pay a substantial tuition and are involved in fund raising, it is not enough.

Therefore. St. Johns turns to you, your readers, and former graduates, and asks you to help continue the work of training leaders of tomorrow. An anniversary celebration has been set for Saturday, May 18, in the Entre Nous Hall adjacent to St. Johns School, in an effort to raise funds.

All alumni are invited. We are particularly interested in contacting members of the classes of the 1940s and 1960s. Anyone with this information or if you wish more information, please call: St. Johns School: 523-3513. St.

Alonso Paterson Sorority says thanks' Recently our sorority, Kappa Lambda Psi, from Montclair State College, participated in a community project. We collected toys, clothing and food to bring to St. Agathas Home of New York Foundling Hospital, so the children could have a special Christmas Party. With the help of many people, the party was a huge success. I would like to thank all of the people that helped put the party together.

The sorority sisters and fraternity brothers of Delta Kappa Psi for coming with us and a special thank-you for all the people who contributed to this drive-members of the Garfield YMCA, parents and relatives of sorority members, sorority and fraternity members, Newark Slip, John Bonnet for the candy canes, and Mr. and Mrs. Delores Beaver for the use of the Santa suit. It was nice to see that Christmas still has that special meaning. Patricia Gallagher President of Kappa Lamba Psi Montclair Thanks for donating toys The Fair Lawn Police Department wishes to thank all those residents who donated toys to the 1984 Ayuda Toy Drive.

Your thoughtful gifts made Christmas a lot brighter for many of New Jerseys underprivileged children. Robert Van Houten Chief of Police Fair Lawn Retarded citizens campaign The Association for Retarded Citizens, Bergen-Passaic Counties, Inc. wishes to thank our friends in the towns of Bergen County for their generosity during our fall campaign for funds. Without the support and financial help of our neighbors, we could not continue to maintain the many services the association provides. If some residents still have the kit in their house, we urge them to mail it back to the unit address which is on the kit.

The Association for Retarded Citizens would like to offer our best wishes for the coming holiday season to all our friends in Bergen County. Funny you should ask by Midgo Boardman They need your help How can we possibly help all the poor people in the world? We cant. Some of us have enough to do to take care of But when we see heart-rending pictures of pathetic famine and, disease victims in Ethiopia, we cringe in horror and pity their sad plight; our heart goes out to them. They might appreciate our concern, but they need our dollars.

Otherwise, a frightening percentage might suffer the fate of 300,000 who already have died. When Congresswoman Marge Roukema recently returned from a six-day, fact-finding tour of Ethiopia, she formed a tri-county fund to funnel direct aid to Dr. Genene Bekele and his medical facility in Makelle. In conjunction with the medical societies of Bergen, Passaic and Sussex counties, she has set up a mechanism that will guarantee he receives all the money to procure supplies he needs most. Make your check payable to Ethiopia Relief Fund and send it to Roukema, 51 Chestnut Ridgewood 07450; or Bergen County Medical Society, 170 Main Hackensack 07501; or Passaic County Medical Society, 642 Broad Clifton 07013.

For more information, call Terri Sprunk in Roukemas office, 447-3900. First time in 58 years The New Year started off with a new concept in Elmwood Park. A woman has been sworn in to serve on the borough council. The last time that happened was in 1926 when Mary Anne McGil-very won the local election, the same time Julia D. Pierce was appointed to fill an unexpired council term.

Now the name is Kay Pulzone, whose late husband, Lawrence, occupied a seat on the council from 1983-65. She carries with her the support of the Elmwood Park voters. Louis Maday is a far more familiar face. On Jan. 1, he started his fourth term as a councilman and will be around at least until 1988.

Maday was the big winner in November. Both he and Pulzone are Republicans. We congratulate Elmwood Park on its choices and add our good wishes to those expressed by the many people who were able to attend the reorganization. Good luck to all! 1 Published every Wednesday by The Fair Lawn East Paterson Shopper, Inc 12-38 River Road Fair Lawn, 07410 General Offices 791-8400 Circulation 791-7117 HOFPiH Jack Frost went too far! postcard Now Henry didnt say Bah, humbug! but only the spelling was different. You know what this cold weather does to my lumbago, he protested.

And I wanted to drive downtown to look at that new fishing rod. Ill never get the car out of the driveway. Cussed snow! (The last statement was said sotto voce because no one uses those words anymore.) A more modern couple around the corner expressed their feelings in more modern language. Of course, we cant print most of it here, but you get the idea. Thats what the husband said, throwing in a few more acceptable words about the miserable snow shovel that weighs a ton empty and the fact that the boroughs snow plow comes along and pushes the snow back into his driveway so he cant get the car out after he has shoveled.

His wife wasnt nearly so colorful at least, not in her language but she counted on wearing her new black coat and the dark brown boots would ruin the look. Could she get away with her old black pumps if she covered the open toe with plastic? But like it or not, we northerners maneuvered on slushy, slippery, snow-covered roads and arrived at our destinations in high spirits. Not necessarily good spirits just high spirits! Dont get me wrong. I LOVE the snow! And Im going out right now to shovel the porch steps so the mailman can deliver the brochures on Life in Sunny Florida I just ordered from the travel agent. Brrrrrr! Okay, guys, weve had our first real snow of the season.

Well, whaddya think? Id like to be a frozen spot on the bedroom windows of some houses in town. (No, I do not have aspirations to become a Peeping Tom! I just want to see the reactions of people when they wake up in the morning, pull up the shade and discover all that white stuff covering ground, trees, cars, telephone poles, fallen leaves, outdoor barbeque grills, etc. Now I have a pretty good idea what was going on in the house up the block. They have three young kids and three fancy sleds with runners still covered with the original paint. Joy must have reigned supreme when the little ones learned they could go SLEDRIDING! They were out on the street before 8:30 a.m., and the littlest one was so bundled up she literally couldnt move her legs to walk! Each kid wore mittens over a pair of gloves, knit caps and hoods, scarves wrapped around their mouths that were soaking wet within the first five minutes (when your nose runs it has to go someplace and boots over two pairs of socks.

Egyptian mummies had nothing on these kids! Do you know how long it takes to dress three little ones with all those clothes? They must have started before it was light! They couldnt see very much or feel a thing but they were happy! Meantime, the couple three doors away greeted what weather forecasters call precipitation with divergent emotions. Look, Henry, isnt it beautiful Martha said with a smile on her wrinkled face.
