This question is asked time and again by beginners and it la Interesting to note the different opinions Holmes says two males for each pen using them on alternate days For a half dozen hens or less allow the male with thef a half day at a time Professor Wheeler says the best results he has ever had were ten hens mated with a year-old male The hens were In three pens four in one and three in each of the others The male was In each pen one day in three Steven-says that by keeping about thirty or forty hens in one pen with two vigorous cockerels allowing only one of hard of a dark-brown color the moat easily reached by the knife Aa stated before these veins lie Just below the skin of the roof of the mouth hence a deep cut la not needed neither la any amount of strength required for the operation It will be observed that Just In front of the line which divides the point at Continued which these veins are to be cut they divide into small branches the course of which is not further shown This Is because they very soon pass through small holes in the bone and go into the Inside of the skull and into the deep tissue where they are quite safe from the killer's knife If then these large veins are to be severed the cut must be made far enough back to reach them before they penetrate the bones of the skull On the other hand if the eut ia made too far back and over the edge of the skull much of the blood will settle In the loose tissue of the neck instead of running out of the mouth thereby causing the clogging of the vessels and preventing complete bleeding aa well as making unsightly discolored areas on the neck near the head It la better to make one cut rather than to cut the "bridge" In the middle or to cut each aide vein separately since this sometimes results in the clotting of the blood at the ends of the veins before the bleeding Is completed Simply because the egg Is fertile Is no guarantee of it hatching out a chick Weak germs cannot hatch and them with the for one cork in each pen with the small active breeds such aa Leghorns Mlnorcts etc 20 hens to one cork are about the number and with the larger breeds such as Wyan-dottes Plymouth Rocks etc 15 hens With Brahmas and all very large breeds 10 hens Fred Grundy says small penned-up flocks comprising six to twelve females and one male will give 60 to 80 per cent of fertile eggs and strong chirks for 15 to 25 days at the beginning of the season After that the percentage of fertility decreases rapidly and the chicks are invariably weak and never make good vigorous breeding fowls It pays well to have two male birds for each pen and alternate them It la a practice that has been used in some of the best yards for a number of years with marked success While it must be admitted that no Incubator is able to do aa good work aa a hen yet In hatching large quantities of eggs it would be too expensive to rely solely on hens A machine is ready when broody nenn are very scarce and if run properly the machine will give almost as good a percentage of strong chicks as will hens But much depends upon the work of the man in charge Hens cannot always be relied upon At times they give up the notion in the midst of the hatch some hens Impsrt too much heat and some not enough Some hens are restless and break eggs and many more things are apt to go wrong st a critical time Both hens and Incubators
