Page 4-News-Beacon, Friday, July 21, 1972 FAIR LAWN Mwscacon Member ofN. J. Press Association MEMBER AEZme Amocmhom FmjnOmd IMS Against Wider Roads Last week, representatives of the borough Planning Board attended a meeting of the Bergen County Planning Board to voice their objection to the proposed widening of the county roads from 50 to 70 feet. Such a plan would mean a great deal of inconvenience, not to mention the infringement on private property it promises. We trust that our officials will carry the borough's objection to the August 7 meeting of the county Planning Board.

Such a plan should not be imposed on the people of Bergen County against their will. Saba Circulation Manager Josephine Coppola Production Manager IF YOU ASK ME A weekly column featuring opinions of Fair Lawn residents The rains came, and came and came. Property was damaged. Houses were flooded. People were killed. But Borough Councilman ANDY FOX came out of it unscathed.

His placard from the May election is still tacked up in the Radburn Shopping Center and the red, white and blue colors look as good as the day they were painted. The public is invited to draw their own conclusiona JOHN WEBER and GUS WESTERGARD, of the Fair Lawn Hunting and Fishing Club continued the clubs tradition of taking a boy fishing, when they accompanied a group from the Junior Sportsmans Club to Ontario on the St. Lawrence River for several days of camping and pike fishing The trip was successful and John and Gus got the greatest thrill watching the young boys tie into big pike. What is your opinion of the current Fischer Spassky championship chess games? My opinion is that Bobby Fischer is a super psyche. Knowing that champion chess is a war of nerves, he has overdone the psyching to a point where he lost my esteem of him as a champion.

It does not exemplify the supposed true tradition of a champ. I believe that he feels its not the playing of the game but the way you win that1 counts. Herman Paris 28-10 Fair Lawn Ave. Photographer Litter Everywhere Every morning crews of workmen, borough employees, go out on clean-up detail. They're picking up the litter left by thoughtless residents, who are too lazy to dispose of their trash properly.

"Cans, cans, cans, up to our ears," is the way one borough official described the situation. The areas where most of the litter is concentrated are the parks, particularly Memorial Park in the picnic area. Some of the litter can be attributed to vandalism. This is the case when the clean-up crews have to sweep broken glass off the ough tennis courts before they can be used safely. Summer is a time for outdoor leisure activities to be enjoyed by all.

The borough has provided the facilities. But it is up to individual citizens to do their part in helping to keep these areas clean and safe for all. Confine Cats Last week's paper carried a story on its front page about the general nuisance caused by cats at large in residential and business areas. Certain thoughtless cat owners do not take the time and effort to keep their cats confined, or at least to supervise them so that they will not become bothersome to their neighbors. The borough does not have an ordinance requiring cats to be licensed, nor are there any restrictions on the number of cats a person may own or harbor.

A borough ordinance, similar to the dog ordinance, imposing licensing and curbing restrictions, would certainly encourage cat owners to become more responsible. It should be considered. I dont think Fishers attitude is very professional. The man is supposed to be a champion and he should be able to work under any conditions. Daniel J.

Ramunda 18-00 Fair Lawn Ave. Dentist As an American Im completely embarrased that Fischer is going back and forth in sportsmanship. This seems to be stimulated by the American side. I am em-embarrased as an American of the sportsmanship. The almighty dollar seems to be the stimulus for the game.

I am surprised at Bobby Fischer as a young man. George Bate 3-23 17th St. Junior High School teacher Its over-played. Its peculiar. I never saw that much of a fuss over a chess game.

Its not that representative. Neither player truly represents his country. Kenneth Raindorf 23 Van Saun PI. Engraving manufacturer I think Bobby Fisher is eccentric. But I think its a great thing that Channel 13 is doing.

Even a non-chess player can watch it and know what its about. It builds up great suspense waiting for the next move. Mrs. Pearl Kwartler 8-09 Elaine Terr. Home-maker MAYOR NICHOLAS R.

FELICE will be heard on FM radio station WFDU, on Sunday (July 23) at 4:30 p.m. He will answer questions about the borough during the program The Mayors moderated by Roy Katz and originiating from the studios of Fairleigh Dickinson University. With 11,616 people registered as members of Memorial Pool for the summer, Recreation Superintendent MONTE WEED noted that not one complained about the overdue increase in rates. Reminiscent of The Godfather," he said, We made them an offer they couldnt refuse. PASTOR TED LAWSON, popular young spiritual leader of the Warren Point Presbyterian Church, recently completed a course at Princeton University- GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES for the fire house to be built in the Columbia Heights section of the borough were held recently.

The quarter of a million dollar facility to be known as Fire House No. 2 will be located on Route 208 and Elm Avenue. The structure is expected to be completed this year. SOME 90 CHILDREN who were enrolled at the Daily Vacation Bible School at Van Riper-Ellis Memorial Baptist Church, starred in the closing program of the school last Friday. The children also gave a sizable donation to the New York Bible Society.

MRS. JAMES BJORNSTAD, this years general director, did an exceptionally fine job in organizing the activities for the two-week session. LOCAL KIWANIANS were, kept laughing at a recent meeting by Joe Gooter, former sports editor of a local daily newspaper. An articulate speaker, Joe believes in tranquilizing the spirit with humor. The borough of Fair Lawn suffers a great loss in the death of DR.

LOUIS PERKEL, a modest and unassuming gentleman whose accomplishments in the field of science were given national recognition and whose talent sparked the local Camera Club. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his widow, FLORA, a constant campanion with whom he shared his many interests. There are power politics involved to some extent in the chess championship. From what little I know about chess. I think Fischer is a better chess player.

Even though Im rooting for Fischer I think he was wrong and the forfeit shoula stand. He lost a lot of favor in Iceland by asking for more money, but this is his way of making a living I cant condemn him. Im not in favor of adjournment unless both sides can have the advantage of the Russians who computerize the plays during an adjournment Dr. Sidney Mann 30 Kerschner PI. Orthodontist Hats Off Each year the borough's summer concerts at Memorial Park seem to get better.

Much of the credit for this can be given to Isadore Freeman, who has supervised Summer Festival concerts for the past 12 years. He is responsible for the professional 'quality of the concerts. Mr. Freeman puts a great deal of work into the planning of the concerts in order to provide variety in programming which would appeal to all age groups. The borough is indeed fortunate to have a man like Isadore Freeman, himself a talented professional pianist.

May the applause of the many thousands who annually enjoy the summer concerts, ring in his ears for a long time to come. Capacity audiences enjoyed the first and third concerts held at Memorial Junior High, due to the rain. The second concert was played to an outdoor audience of between two and three thousand. I think that its good theyre having the World Chess Championship. Bobby Fischer got more publicity because he is an American, but they both did equally foolish things.

Steven Rabin 39-04 Tierney PI. Oboe Player I dislike Fishers attitude. I think he is abusing the sport of chess by his outrageous demands. They are totally out of proportion. Howard Siegler 18-00 Fair Lawn Ave.
