Three years later in 1954 Dr. W. C. L. Memeon of the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, after intensive research, claimed to have isolated the cause of the disaster-tiny deadly particles related to the coal smoke particles isolated from samples of the London smog which killed 2,000 in 1952.

The Memeon report was said to debunk the theory that the Donora deaths were due to sulphur dioxide gas. There has been no- further opportunity for first-hand research. Donora has had no recurrence of the unusual atmospheric conditions that brought sudden death. Today the city serves as a model for many towns with similar problems.
