(The appeal ance from streets was that big business was. being don? and it is believed that nearly every merchant felt the effect of the holiday trade.

All the, stores have prepared splen; didly for Christmas, large and" handsome stocks being carried, furnishing almost anything that could be desired. Especially attractive year are the show windows of the leading retail establishments, the dressing of many of them showing. novel and artistic effects. To name the attractive windows would be to give almost a com plete list of the Front, Princess and Market street merchants. Senator Berry's Successor: It developed that the performance of Wild Man Davis in the senate Wednesday was too crude even for the stomachs of curiosity-seekers who looked down from the senate gal- leries to see the freak perform. Very few people except conscientious reporters in the press gallery witnessed the concluding stunts.

It cannot be pleasant for senators to have this raw demagogue among them, and those from southern states must experience a special annoyance. We feel real sympathy for Senator Tillman, who will behold in Davis a gross caricature of himself, and we hope that the living example so near at hand will have a wholesome effect upon Davis, in fact, is certain to discredit the rol of senatorial wild man pretty thoroughly. COOPER WTLMTNGTON. N. hristmas mmm V. Boilers at Plant of Clndon Company OF Hade After Inspection of Boilers on December 2d Result Insix Ma; Known to Local JJoard of lire Underwriters and Through Then to the Mayor at theCity The Mayor licceives the Letter Simply information, But Repeats 'I lt Admits no Responsibility for the Condition of the riant. Following an inspection of the Bteam boilers at the plain of the Clur-endon Waterworks Company, made on the second of December py an inspector of the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection Company, it was- reported to the company and to the local board of Fire Underwriters that the boilers in good condition, and while Borne repairs may have to be made sometime in the future, they are now capable of good service.

This matter is of interest on account of the publication several weeks ago that the Hartford Company had complained through Messrs Willard and Giles that conditions at the plant of the waterworks company were not favorable and suggestions looking to other arrangements were suggested to ibe in order. Inspector Francis wbn addressed the communication to Messrs Willard and Giles stated that efforts made during the past year to arrange for the insnectlon of the larerp hmlpr had always been met with the statement that the boiler could not be that time, in reply to Mr. Francis xjoiiimunlcation, Superintendent Rob- ertson wrote that all the boilers were 4n sood condition and that the boiler Wf-- for inspection, at any time. Following this information the Hartford company sent an inspector to this city and the result was convincing, showing that the boilers are in good condition and ready for good service. The Local Board of Fire Underwriters, at a meeting on December 10th, Instructed their secretary, Mr.

S. M. Boatwright to mail a copy of the inspection report of the Clarendon Water Company's boilers to the mayor and this was done, the report having been received by Mayor Springer on Wednesday last The report Inspector James Coyne of the Hertford Steam Boiler Inspection compL ay, of the condition of the three hollars at the Clarendon Water Company's plant, made following his inspection on the second of December showed that the general condition cf Boiler No. 1 is good ana the setting is in good repair. Boilers 2 and 3 under steam were examined externally, and no leakage or (distress was noted.

Safety valves were free and other attachments were in forking order. Boiler No. 1 was examined both internally atid externally and boiler was found inT good condition, gage being tested and adjusted and other attachments apparently in working order. Mayor Springer, on receipt of the communication from the secretary of the local board of Underwrites, ad Hressed the following reply to them, tvhich explains itself. Mr.

S. M. Boatwright, Secretary Lo-fcal Board of Underwriters, Wilmington, N. C. Dear Sir: I beg to acknowledge your favor of the 11th.

Your attention is icalled to my communication of the 3rd of this month in which it was stated that the city was not the owner of Jior In possessidk of the waterworks plant. Your present letter therefore ca nonly be accepted as conveying information, which may or may not be of interest to the city, but in no wise does the city admit any responsibility for the condition of the waterworks plant or any part 'thereof. Yours truly, W. E. Springer.
