Friday, May 12, 1905 NO CASE FOR If the contention of the Italian government in the case, of the woman convicted of murder in a New Jersey court is correct, then" every time the subject of that pr any other, foreign government having like treaty wun ours is convicted of a crime in the courts of any qne of our states the federal courts should interfere to whether the accused has had a fair trial. We know nothing as to the merits of this case upon the facts developed on the: trial except that the defendant was cnarged with having murdered another woman through jealousy and was, convicted. The presumption is that she had a fair trial.

If she did not there was the supreme court of the state to which she could appeal. t' The fact that the condemned person is a woman has no bearing upon the point raised by the Italian consul general who has attempted to have the federal courts interfere in a case in which no federal question' is raised We hope the woman will not bej hanged, but we want to see her escape the extreme penalty through the ac-j tion of the governor under the laws of the state of New Jersey and not by reason of any interference by the federal court at the request of a tor at Tempting Prices Elegant dlsplar of clever Spring Stjlj in tvo tonl Taffeta, fctat-in Toulards and Ponger In colors for Shirt VttUc, '-Suits and Dresses. We are glad -to see that the editor of The Journal has thorough knowledge of the character of the Wilmington people. In some sections of the state they have either been gredtly misrepresented or) misun derstood. In The Journal editorial, which we quote below, their characteristics are very accurately defined: For a few dvs last week the people of. the city) of Wilmington in this state of North Carolina the impression upon the outside world that they could and would tear un local affairs In their strturele over a municipal election. And the outside world for a few days had the impression that Wilmington would reoeat the scenes at Warsaw or at Chicasra.

that Its people were an incendiary calibre, auick tricser and rapld-fire-to-kill-kind-Rut while no stronger advocates and defenders of personal rights and liberties can be found than these same Wilmimrtohians. there is a vast i difference between the little Pyrotechnic political -lisplav of last week, and the real uprisiner in a matter of constitutional rights. i 5 In the whole local excitement which held public attention for a few days there was to be noted the steady, conservative undercurrent among" the citizens, which at the decisive moment came forth, and the excitement was over at once. and. without anv disturbance of law or order, every municipal matter was ciuietlv settled 'and the local government went alonsc without a jar to break its regular affairs, Lieutenant Hobson had better make the most of the short time he has left.

A quietus jwill soon be put to. his promiscuous girl kissing propensities. Wonder which Mr. Roosevelt calla the strenuous life and wrhich the simple when the one in the Colorado moun-tains is compared with that of Washington? I An Ohio woman set up the defense in a suit for divorce that she sang and played thd piano to her husband. The plaintiff had no difficulty in securing a judgment.

The railway congress in session in Washington this week should not be confounded with the one the president will convene in the same city next fall Both, though may be working 'for the same ends. Davidson falls in line for the Wins ton Southbound railroad. Three town ships of that county have voted a sub scription of one hundred and fifty thou sand dollars. Dispensary Closed for Holiday. In the front wmdow of one of our dispensary establishments yesterday a card was displayed tilese words, "Holiday Tomorrow." It Cwas an invitation, possibly, of which the bibulously inclined took due notice; an invitation to lay in a supply of whiskey at one of these temperance joints for use on the day set apart to the memory of the Confederate dead.

If the old soldiers who died for South Carolina could have seen this sign we wonder if they would not have that they had sacrificed their thought lives in vain for 3. state devoted always until these latter times of graft and pelf to the highest ideals of government, now engaged in the business of selling whis key for the profit that isi in it. Sure-; ly this is not a spectacle to encourage high living in those who hold the honor of the; state in good esteem Charleston News and Courier, May 10. Mrs. Maybrick Appears in jCourt.

Richmond, May 10 The Bar oness Delloques and her daughter, Mrs. Florence E. Maybrick, were in the chancery court here today to hear ar gument of a motion made by the plaintiff in the great land suit of the baron ess against D. W. Armstrong and others.

The motion was to tax the costs claimed to' have been illegally in curred by the plaintiff, in depositions taken in Washington recently. The court made a ruling which was favor able to the plaintiff. Depositions in the case were continued. 1 i NumlMir of Victims Reaches 112. Birmingham, May 8.

We'll send yo a a sample, free SCOTT BOWNE, 409 Pearl Street, NeYork. jAn order effective May 1st has been issued by Vice President Gannon, of the Atlantic and-North Carolina Company, appointing Fred L. Merritt, secretary to the president of the company, as land and industrial agent of that railroad company. Mr.

Merritt will retain his former position, these other duties being added to it. We consider this an Important ste ir the effort, to build up the section through which this road runs. That is splendid territory. What it needs 1 developers the right kind of immigrants, not only tenants of the soil, bat men with means to establish in dustrial plants or an Kinus. we are not surprised at this news- We have take teen expecting this company to such action.

We believe it has gone into this railroad business with the intention of developing that section of the state; indeed, its own interests would require it to do so, but outside of these interests we believe it will do v.bat it can to add to the wealth and prosperity of the section along its route a id in the eastern territory of the -state. This action is in keeping with the present policy of railway companies of the 1 progressive the south. Other railroads have done much alone this line for their territory. We hope the old "Mullet" road will be equally as successful. The newspapers of the state, especially those of the eastern section, should give Mr.

Merritt all aid in their power. The Washington Tost thinks the ca nal is now the only lottery on the isthmus of Panama. Secretary Shaw is convinced and figures to prove his contention that If the revenues of the government are larger than anticipated for th next two months the deficit will be smaller than was expected. Dur ham Sun. Why necessarily so? Mr.

Shaw over- ooks the contingency of the expenses for the same time being larger than anticipated If he includes this possibility in his calculations what will he predict the results to be? How many if asked, could give tbe name of the author of the ex pression "wiin tne sum or ray teetn person as Justin McCarthy, after using the expression in an article on a cer tian political crisis in England, apolo gized for using what he called a "vulgar phrase." The Boston Herald calls attention to the fact that this expres sion was used by Job and can be found In chapter 19, verse 20, of that book of the Bible. The people of Gaston county voted the other day on the question of issu ing bonds for road improvement. The Gazette states that among those who yoted against the proposition was a blind man eighty years old who did not Own any property. He, of course, does not pay a cent of taxes. When he trav- els the hifirhwavs he has to ero afoot or 13 depend on the kindness of a neighbor for a "lift." It would be natural to suppose, tinder these circumstances, that for his own sake and for that of.

his neighbors he would want good, smooth roads in his section. Human nature is a queer thing, Having contributed to the police court records of every city on the con tinent. John Doc and his pal. Who can foretell the result of the strike in Chicago if both sides continue to gain, as was announced in the press dispatches yesterday? According to Jefferson day banquet speakers that statesman was the advocate of every political principle held by each and every faction of the political parties of the present day. Who knows but what we will soon discover that "George Washington favored such measures as high protective tariff in order to bring about reciprocity trea- pal ownership of railway and telegraph lines; retention of the Philippines and the adoption of the Piatt amendment for the purpose of insuring the annexation of Cuba at some future day.

The world nas no record of a man breaking down under the mental strain cf attending- to his own business. Washington. Post, You are wrong there in fact have got the proposition exactly reversed. The man who neglects his own bust; hess to attend to other people's has not mind enough to be over-strained. Mr.

Taft stirred up the railway magnates at the association" banquet the other night. A debate on such occasions is something unusual. will accept the explanation of your i very' intelligent correspondent, Mr; J. E. Purcell, that it was the presence of people by the name of Russell in the neighborhood that led to the nanies of Hawley and Russell being associated.

Really I have heard that Mr. Thomas B. Russell of Robeson cr Richmond, was an older half brotner of Judge Russell As to Mr. Lindsay, I have heard my mother and her people (the McEweat') speak of his mother being in a trance, and being buried while in that condition, being taken up, as stated by me in my April 12th letter, and, as I it occurred in Scotland county, before Mr Lindsay's birth. 1 do not know the source of their information.

I was inclined to think that as my great was Gaelic speaking "bonnie Highland lassie," I voru near Arran that she might have been acquainted with the Lindsay family in Scotland, but I do not know this to have been the case. I was not certain as to the place oi residence of Mr. Lindsa5r, but thought it was about Greeisboro. Neither was I sure about the Mrs. Wright I mentioned being Mrs Lindsay's daughlev; but thought that I was sure about Mr.

Jesse H. Lindsay of Greensboro bem a son of the Rev. Mr. Lindsay, and it seems to me I have seen it so stated in the North Carolina Presbyterian when it was published in Wilmington. But if Mr.

Purcell knows that he was not, I have no documentary evidence on the subject. I was not aware that Mr, Lindsay made a final breakdown in the minis try, but had heard that he was accused of playing cards, and that on fne occasion he went to sleep in the pulpit and got to dreaming about cards, and averred by the ineffable nam. that "Spades are Trumps," but I had supposed it a fabrication altogether. Well, many times, if not always we might say "Omnia res terrae incernm est!" I J. D.

I "THE NEGRO IN So the Episcopal church congress now in session; in New York has again taken up the negro question.

'Che people of North Carolina, irrespective of church affiliation, will be anxious to know what Bishop Strange had to I say cn this subject- during its discus- sion Tuesday night. We have seen nn TPnnrt. vet of his speech. If the bishops and the priests solve ihis 1 i problem satisfactorily they -will win the everlasting gratitude of the people of the south. The lawyers, politicians and statesmen of this section have been battling with, it for forty years and are no nearer; the solution now than at the beginning.

is true the negroes' purely political; position was settled by the franchise amendments to the of the southern states, but even this partial settlement of the question is only temporary, for as fast as the educated negroes come of age they can enjoy the right of suffrage, and it will not be many years before those now disfranchised will have died out and their places be taken by the younger generation who -AND.
