25 Notre Dame 7 Lane Spurs Indians' Victory Over Cajuns Sty Sunbag Abuertiser Sports By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor MONROE First, it was Robbie Mahfouz Now it's Bob Lane. Those former LSU Sarterbacks are bad news 'USL's Ragin' Cajuns. Last week Mahfouz was the quarterback as Southeastern Louisiana took a 7-0 win over USL. And here at Ma lone Stadium before 12,555 last night, Lane came on in late relief of Northeast Louisiana starter John Holman and pitched two touchdown passes in the final five minutes to guide a 20-17 comeback victo Advertiser. Lafayette, Sunday, Sept.

20, 1981 61 yards of real estate to tne USL. 26 on the next play-before coughing it up to Cooter Mansur Following that lead, Caldarera was picked off by Keith Sims (Sims' second theft) at the USL 30 at the 14:04 mark By this time, there had been seven turnovers. Does that qualify as a baker's half-dozen The Indians suddenly couldn't help themselves, and scored in seven plays for a 7-0 lead Big plays were a 15 yard pass to Robbie Green to the 15 and a 13 yard interference penalty to the Cajun two. Dewayne Robinson did the honors two plays later from a yard away, and Scott Martin booted the extra point. USL, sparked bv a 23-yard draw play to the Cajun 46 by Davis, then got on the board with a 25-yard Speer field goal the first score by the USL offense since the second period at Southern Mississippi, some seven quarters of inactivity That came with 5:23 left, and Holman turned around to march his troops into serious scoring range again.

But Bobby Craighead's halfback pass was you guessed it intercepted at the USL goal bv Michael Dupre with 21 seconds remaining til! the break to snuff that threat and keep the Cajuns within range heading into the intermission. It paid rich dividends, as Greg Davis rambled for 14 yards to the 10 on first down and Caldarera rifled a slant-in to Hobbs for a 10-y ard score with 9: 12 to play- It was Hobbs' first career TD. Speer's PAT put the Cajuns up bv 10. and forced NLU Head Coach Pat Collins to insert backup quarterback Lane in an effort to rally the home troops. And that move, borne out of desperation, produced instant results, as the hometown boy from Neville moved the Indians 68 yards in 13 snaps for a touchdown Lane was seven-of-10 on the drive, which culminated in a two-yard payoff to flanker Mitch Renfro with 5 05 to play.

But Lane's two-point conversion pass try was tipped away by senior linebacker Rob Falivene and the count remained 17-13, Cajuns, with five nervous minutes to play Excitement was foreign to the first half, however. The game opened with one of the more laughable collections of turnovers this side of a pastry shop, as the two offenses surrendered the ball twice each in the opening 15 minutes of action USL suffered a fumble and an interception, the latter with Caldarera trying for Claude Charles down the side lines from the NLU 38 with 1 48 to go in the period Northeast served up a pair of interceptions by Holman, the most damaging a theft by Cajun safetv David Pingstori at the USL Goaline with 4 :08 left in the period a pickoff that he returned 40 yards. The Cajuns of Coach Sam Robertson got one more chance, after seeing a solid 17-7 lead melt away before their eyes, but could not come back. Senior Curt Caldarera. in his first start at USL, hit Norris Hamm for 25 yards to the NLU 38 with eight seconds to play (Hamm went out of bounds to stop the clock, but the official ruled that he did not get out of bounds and the clock continued to run).

Thus the visitors could not get another snap off, as the Cajuns wasted the precious final seconds of a close game without putting points on the board for the second straight week It was a thrilling finish to what originally promised to be a mistake-filled game with little of note. USL took a 10-7 lead into the final period of play, after most of a listless third period mirrored an error-plagued first half of action led 7-3 by the Indians. And characteristically enough, it was an NLU turnover that set up the visitors' first touchdown since the season opener. A George Johns tumble at the Northeast 33 was recovered by sophomore linebacker Bruce Jackson at the 1:18 mark of the quarter Caldarera hit Gregg Hobbs for seven yards on first down, and a late hit penalty advanced the ball 13 yards further to the 13 for a crucial first down. On a second and 12 at the 15, Caldarera rolled right and hit Claude Charles crossing through the Indian secondaiy for the touchdown that forged the first Cajun lead of the night and first of the season.

Oscar Speer's extra point made it 10-7, Cajuns with 10 seconds to go in the period. The TD was the first scoring toss in Caldarera's injury-plagued career and the second such score for Charles, a converted defensive back who had a 62-yard rocket last year. Then, after a brief futile NLU series, Caldarera took his team to a second touchdown, running for one first down (18 yards to the Indian 47) and passing nine yards to the 36 for another first to Hobbs. The drive stalled at that point, and Speer drilled a 47-yard field goal, but the NLU noseguard jumped offsides and Ro The drive of bounds. We'll have to look at that one on the films." The end resuli was confusion, as Calderera looked back at a swiftly dwindling clock and could not get off a play before game's end.

It was a bitter end to the game for Calderera, who according to Robertson performed well in his first shot at No.l. "I thought Curt did very well," said Robertson. "He was audibling on all our big plays in the second half, and he showed good poise out there. Halfback Greg Davis also came in for praise from his coach after dashing for 164 yards on 27 carries the first 100-yard game at USL since Ed Blanco gained Iu4 yards against Arkansas State lastysar That was two vards short of the all-time Cajun recdrd of 166, set by Bill Bayard against Tampa in 1965 "Greg Davis looked super," said Robertson. "He showed good second-effort running But the Cajun offense on the whole missed some chances at points.

"We had the opportunity to put a lot more points on the board," said Robertson. "We've got to iearn to quit making errors and stupid mistakes. We had a good effort for three quarters." The Cajuns passed up a successful 47-yard Oscar Speer field goal in the fourth period for what turned out to be a 10-yard TD pass from Calderera to Gregg Hobbs, but it was not a move of choice. "They called encroachment before the snap." Robertson noted. There was no decision to make." It was a frustrating end to a game that had promise in the second half.

As Robertson himself noted, "We shouldn't lose one like that." By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor MONROE "We shouldn't lose one like that." Thus spake USL Head Football Coach Sam Robertson after his team went down to its third straight defeat of 1981 here Saturday night at Malone Stadium, as backup quarterback Bob Lane led a 20-17 comeback victory by the Northeast Indians. The Indians scored twice in the last five minutes both times on Lane passes to erase a hard-earned 17-7 Cajun advantage built on a strong ground game led by halfback Greg Davis and the audible-calling of senior quarteback Curt Calderera in his first varsity start. "We lost our poise in the fourth Robertson added "And we made two or three bad mental mistakes that we can't make. And we didn't make the big defensive plays." The winning TD was a 19-yard pass to Bobby Lewis, coming over Mack Scott in the corner of the USL end zone with 48 seconds left to play. Of that play, Robertson said, "We were in man-to-man coverage and the quarterback had at least five seconds to throw the ball.

We got no penetration from the defensive line on that play." Some 40 seconds later. Calderera had just hit Norris Hamm for 25 yards to the 38 yard line of NLU and appeared to get out of bounds on the play. But there was confusion over that question. "The receiver caught the ball," Robertson began, "and went out of bounds. But the clock was not stopped.

(AP) Sophomore Jesse Mvles ran for two second-half touchdowns Saturday night the last with 55 seconds to play, to rally Louisiana State In a 27-2-4 too! hart victory over stubborn Oregon State. Oregon State, a 20-point underuog. repeatedly stung LSU with the passing of Kd Singler, who threw for three touchdowns, including ne with 4:39 to go that gave the Beavers a 24-20 lead. After Singlcr's 18-yard scoring pass to Tim Sim, LSU ma reed 80 yards in 10 plays to score the deciding touchdown Myles took an option pitch from quarter Alan Risher and sprinted 2 yards into the end zone.

The victory pushed liU to 1-2 after back to back losses to Alabama and Notre Dame. Oregon State slipped toll. Mvles ran 41 yards for a touchdown late the third quarter to break a 10-all tie, but Oregon State knotted the score at 17-17 on the first play of the fourth quarter on Dar-ryl Minor's 2-yard run. David Johnston's second field goal of the game gave LSU a 3-point edge midway in the final quarter before the hot -handed Singler drove the Beavers 78 yards in five plays for the go-ahead touchdown with 4:49 to play In the game's standout offensive performance, Singler completed 21 of 34 pass attempts for 313 yards and two touchdowns Risher's scrambling 34-yard pass completion to Or-lando MeDaniel on a second-and-20 kept the Tigers' winning drive alive and gave the a first down at the Oregon State 11-yard line with 2:03 to play. Three plays later Myles scored the winning touchdown.

Singler and Orego State weren't through. Aided by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Beavers got the ball at their own 47 with 49 seconds to play. Three Singler passes were incomplete before Ramsey Dardar sank Singler for a nine-yard loss, but LSU again was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. On 4th-and-four, Singlcr's pass to Ron Voegel was broken up by Lawrence Williams, and then LSU ran out the clock. Collier came up with key third down plays on Southern Mississippi's first two touchdown drives.

He scrambled out of the pocket, eluded tacklers in his own backfield and raced 34 yards on a third-and-six to set up his school first touchdown. On Southern Mississippi's second touchdown drive, he hit tight end Jim Brown with a six-yard pass to set up a first-and-goal at the six-yard line. Elmore finished the night 13-28-3 for 182 yards. Eleven of his completions came on 20 second-half attempts, and they netted 118 yards. Tulane controlled the ball against North Texas runs, sacked Thompson four times and joined other defenders in pressuring the freshman, who was flagged twice in the first half for throwing the ball away.

Those infractions cost North Texas 36 yards in penalties.
